Abstract A study on L.v. Beethoven Piano Sonate Op.14, No.2 Eun-Bi Ji Department of music Graduate School, Catholic Kwandong University Directed by Professor Hyo-Rhim Hahm Beethoven famously bridged the classical and romantic era. During his early-period, Beethoven composed by copying Neefe, Mozart, Haydn, Schenk, and during his middle-period, he widen his sense of musical expression by presenting internal sensibility. Beethoven formulated his original style by appling new ways of expressing romanticism during his third-period. Beethoven composed 32 piano sonatas throughout his entire career, and these showed the essence of his compositional techniques. The Piano Sonata No. 10 in G major, Op. 14, No. 2, composed in 1798–1799, is an early-period work by Beethoven, dedicated to Baroness Josefa von Braun. The first movement has a typical sonata form(A-B-A), and emphasis theme by continuous repetition. In the first theme, musical motive and arpeggio in minor triad repeatedly appear as scale sequence. This theme starts with a tonic chord, but makes trick theme work like double dominant chord(I-IV6). The second theme introduce by chromatic motion, and progresses to D major by passing dominant of principal key. The second-movement is C major and ante movement, comprised of three variations by theme and coda in six measures. The mood of this movement is cheerful and in folk style, quite different from the first movement, and expresses a march effect by staccato like music for percussion. Third-movement is entitled "Scherzo" but is actually in small rondo form, as rondo(A) - second theme(B) - recapitulation(A) - third theme(C) - recapitulation(A) - coda. In this movement many small ternary forms appear, and we can observe an exciting progress by the repeated theme and the expansion of passage. Different from other Beethovens sonatas, this movement finish to the end of music calmly. One of the Beethoven's early piano sonatas, piano sonata Op.14-2 is a unique and interesting work, which changes the normal form of typical piano sonatas. This sonata shows new sonata forms by exchanging lyrical melody like conversation, exquisite harmony with staccato and rest, characterful finish
