During the period of Japanese occupation (1910-1945) and the Korean
War (1950-1953), extensive forest in Korea was severely degraded by
over-cutting and fire. In addition, intensive forest use to get fuel,
organic compost, livestock feed, and so on contributed to forest
devastation as well. South Korean government particularly in the 1960s
launched large-scale tree planting campaigns to reforest those denuded
mountains. As the result of such efforts, the large-scale tree planting
project is evaluated internationally as the exemplary case, which
rehabilitated damaged forest successfully, in these days. Even though so,
study on ecological effects that those plantation led, is very rare in
Korea. This study aims to clarify the effects of ecological restoration
that they brought based on soil environmental factors and vegetation
information such as species composition, species diversity, and vegetation
dynamics in pitch pine (Pinus rigida) and black locust (Robinia
pseudoacacia) plantation as the representative plantation in Korea.
Increase of litter layer thickness and changes of physic-chemical
properties including increasing organic matter content in soil fulfill the
goal planned for improving soil environment. As the result of stand
ordination based on vegetation data collected from plantation and native
oak selected as the reference stands, species composition of plantation
resembled to that of reference stands. As the results of analysis on
frequency distribution of diameter classes of major tree species, both
plantations showed a trend to be replaced by native oak stands. Crown
projection diagrams reflected the trends as well. Species diversities of
both plantations were higher than those of reference stands or similar
to theirs and functional diversities were similar to each other. As the
result of stand ordination based on functional type information collected
from plantation and native oak stands selected as the reference plot,
functional type composition of both plantations resembled to that of
reference stands. Those results were interpreted that introduced trees,
firstly aided establishment of plants by controlling soil erosion and
further plant growth by improving physic-chemical properties of soil, and
consequently recovery of structure and function of damaged forest
ecosystem. Reforestation carried out by introducing exotic plant species
like pitch pine (Pinus rigida) and black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia)
plantation that this study was carried out, corresponds to reallocation or
replacement rather than restoration. But as were shown in the results of
this study, both plantations, although they were constructed by
introducing an alien species, were succeeded to the native vegetation
and thereby met the restoration goal successfully.
