Porous non-precious carbon nanostructures as an electrocatalyst have been known to exhibit improved electrocatalytic activities due to their high specific surface area and favorable active sites supported by the doped transition metals such as Co and Fe, and non-metallic elements such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and boron for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). In this study, the porous metal-nitrogen doped carbon nanostructures were prepared using a well-stacked arrangement of template materials in the presence of polyvinylpyrrolidone as nitrogen and carbon sources and iron phthalocyanine as iron and nitrogen sources. The as-prepared nanostructures show a high specific surface area (∼361.3 m2 g-1), porous structure, and doped metal and nitrogen species into carbon structures. In particular, the porous Fe-N-doped carbon nanostructure exhibits excellent ORR electrocatalytic properties in alkaline electrolyte; i.e., electron transfer number close to 4, high half-wave potential (0.85 V), improved electrochemical stability. Thus, H-Fe/N/C electrocatalyst can be expected to be utilized as a cathode for the ORR in alkaline solution.
