This dissertation is a study of the Song cycle ”Gedichte der Königin Maria Stuart, op.135 by Robert Schumann. Schumann wrote “Gedichte der Königin Maria Stuart” in 1852 as his last Lieder for solo voice and the interesting thing is, the poems were originally written by the imprisoned Mary Queen of Scots as she awaited execution. It was very similar to Schumann’s tragic life because he was suffering from deep depression when he wrote this song cycle. Therefore, this study examines German Lied in the Nineteenth - Century, especially looking at the German Lied composer Robert Schumann. Also, the thesis is an in depth study into the life of Queen Mary Stuart and an analysis of her 5 poems. Also the study looks at how Schuman created these songs with musical and poetic expression. In Germany the great age of song began in the 19th century. German composers had written music for voice with keyboard accompaniment before this time, but it flowered with German literature in the Romantic era. In the Romantic era, many composers were trying to freely express their ideas in music. Schumann had an outstanding ability to express German Literature in music because of his exceptional inspirational skills. This sparked the genre known as the Lied. Most importantly, “Gedichte der Königin Maria Stuart” focused on the song, demonstrating the ways in which Schumann’s musical settings of Queen Mary’s poetry constituted a reinterpreted and knowing response to the poet’s work to suit his own express objectives. “Gedichte der Königin Maria Stuart” depicts hopelessness and depression but this music shows very masterful and remarkable expression in music similar to Schumann’s late works. As he mentioned before “The poet sees better than other mortals”, he tied up music and poem. In the German Lied, the vocal lines are declamatory rather than melodic, and also the role of the piano accompaniment is a substantial contributor to the vocal part as the duet makes an effective poetic expression. The song cycle is comprised of five minor chord songs. The five songs connect song to song by poetic syllables and meters. Interestingly, all five songs use the same time signature to produce an identical feeling. However, Schumann was attempting to depict a variety of expressions relative to Queen Mary’s biographical and personal characteristics. This study focuses on the lives of Queen Mary and Robert Schumann, and explains how Schumann understood Queen Mary’s tragic fate. Schumann was one of the most highly regarded composers, thoroughly committed intellectually and emotionally to the idea of music being composed to reflect his darkest feelings. He was attempting to escape his tragic life and to comfort himself via this song cycle. To this end, this dissertation depicts Queen Mary’s tragic life, and attempts to understand the depth of Schuman’s music.
