This study explores the subjectivity of emotional labor of clinical nurse specialists and applies Q-methodology in order to develop a deep understanding of emotional labors of clinical nurse specialists by identifying types of emotional labor experienced by clinical nurse specialists and providing an account for characteristics of each type. By doing so, this study aims to provide basic data that can be utilized for managing individual welfare and emotional labor of clinical nurses specialists and for their improving performance at work. 103 statements related to emotional labor were collected from Q-population, comprising of 18 clinical nurse specialists working in A hospital in the city S. Researcher selected 31 Q-samples from Q-population. P-samples were taken from 29 clinical nurse specialists working in Hospital A in City S. P-samples were classified depending on their level of agreement, into 31 questions from Q-population. 31 Q-samples were classified into 7-point scales so they would form normal distribution. This study was conducted from September 04, 2015 to October 30th. Q-factor analysis through PC-QUANL Program of collected data revealed five types of emotional labor as suffered by clinical nurse specialists. Type I is ‘Emotional suppression in order to live up to professional expectations of nurse'. The nurse believes clinical nurse specialist recognized and trusted profession and that there are many expectations for the profession. The nurse therefore refrains from candidly expressing emotions so the individual behavior may harm the reputation of other clinical nurse specialists TypeⅡ is ‘Emotional suppression from fear of autonomous decision-making'. The nurse, as a professional, performs his roles and responsibilities well. The nurse, however hides the fears potential risks coming from specialized clinical care activities of professional nurses ranging from not only consultation, coordination and treatment but also medical decisions like prescription. Type Ⅲ is ‘Artificial expression of positive emotions for ease of multi-channel communications'. The nurse provides and is recognized for voluntary nursing and care services based on professional nursing abilities. The nurse provides appropriate counseling to her patients and conducts research to enhance role of educators and develop ways of practicing profession. The nurse leverages her relationships with cooperating doctors, nursing team leaders and other departments to communicate seamlessly across variety of situations that occur while performing her duties. The nurse successfully relieve anxiety or tensions by expressing positive emotions through professional competence. Type Ⅳ is ‘Suppression of burden from inability to meet high expectations'. As a senior clinical care nurse practitioners in their own areas of expertise, the nurse maintains autonomy in conducting professional work and continuity of care. The nurse ir recognized and trusted by his patients in teaching or counseling and the nurse tries to live up to the expectation. However, when the nurse cannot conduct the duties well due to excessive workload, the nurse has trouble expressing the burdens. Type Ⅴ is ‘Suppression of negative emotions during role conflicts in hierarchical work structure’. The clinical nurse specialist upholds professional autonomy by communicating based on mutual respect and trust between professionals.
