This study aims to investigate the effect of group art therapy on empathic ability and peer relationship of children targeting lower graders in primary school. For the foregoing, this study assigned 12 children with difficulties in empathic ability and peer relationship randomly to experimental and control groups of six respectively, and conducted group art therapy program to experimental group for 15 times in total on a weekly basis from June through September 2015. To verify the effect of group art therapy program on empathic ability and peer relationship of children, this study used a scale of empathic ability and peer relationship, and analyzed changes in groups and individuals through the result of regression analysis on the group art therapy and KSD drawing test. Based on the methods mentioned above, this study conducted group art therapy and was able to obtain following results. Through group art therapy, the scale of empathic ability and peer relationship of children in experimental group who participated in this study was improved, which enabled this study to confirm a positive change as a statistically significant difference came out. In addition, as a result of qualitatively analyzing changes in empathic ability and peer relationship in the process of group art therapy, children who were indifferent with self-centered way of thinking in use of language or behavior between group members at the early stage showed understanding, thinking of and are considerate to others’ situation as sessions repeated. Group members who showed hyperactivity in the early stage lowered and adjusted one’s voice reflecting other members’ opinion as sessions went by, and the ones who were shy and had difficulties in self-expression converted to the attitude of suggesting one’s opinion and expressing what he or she wants in a natural way as the sessions went to the latter half, showing a positive change that two different aspects were mediated. This is considered that exchanging positive and negative feedbacks with another in a peer group and experience of various works through art media exerted an influence on the improvement of empathic ability and peer relationship by giving receptive changes to language and behavior of groups of children. As results of investigating changes in children which were shown in the KSD drawing test before and after group art therapy, children, before the test, painted a picture reminding of a negative peer relationship such as a drawing that all are receiving lessons in a classroom, expression of a situation that he or she is arguing with friends etc. In the test conducted after group art therapy, however, inside the school classroom or an image of playground was described, and most children did a painting that reminds of playing with the whole classmates such as playing soccer, dodge ball, game of tag etc, and emotional expressions of one’s and others’ feeling were increased in the description of drawing. When considering expression of a positive and interactive activity through the drawing test, it is considered to have an influence on the improvement of empathic ability and peer relationship. As investigated in the above, contents of qualitatively analysis on the effect of group art therapy on empathic ability and peer relationship of children are the results that back up the result of a quantitative study, which means that group art therapy conducted for children is effective for improvement of empathic ability and peer relationship.
