This study aims to identify the geographical distribution of warm temperature evergreen broad-leaved woody plants (warm evergreens) in relation to climatic factors in the Korean Peninsula and then project the future distributions under climate changes. For this, the geographical range of 85 warm evergreen species, which are native to the Korean Peninsula, were first listed up and then classified into several categories based on the patterns of geographical distributions and plant physiognomies. The warm evergreens representing the characteristics of each category were selected from the 85 species. Potential habitats of the selected warm evergreens were projected in relation to coldest month mean temperature and coldest quarter precipitation using Generalized Additive Model (GAM) algorithm, a species distribution model(SDM). Then, the future distributions of warm evergreens were projected with GAMs under climate changes. The current and future climate data were obtained from the worldclim website. The current climate data were the average of fifty years. The future climate conditions in 2050 and 2070 were projected based on HadGem2-AO model according to RCP 4.5 and 8.5 scenarios. In addition, the land-use data were employed to estimate human influences on the potential habitats of warm evergreens. The warm evergreens were categorized into tree, shrub and vine according to plant physiognomies and middle coastal type, southeastern coastal type, southern inland type, southern coastal type and isolated type based on spatial patterns of geographical distributions. 18 warm evergreens representing the characteristics of plant physiognomic groups and regional groups were selected based on the number of presence data, > 50 presence data for each species. The result of GAM models showed that coldest month mean temperature was a significant factor to determine the presence of all warm evergreens but coldest quarter precipitation was for several species out of 18. Quercus acuta showed the maximum area of potential habitat and Raphiolepis indica var. umbellate the minimum area under current climate. As considering the types of land-use, Trachelospermum asiaticum var. intermedium presented the maximum area of potential habitat and Neolitsea sericea the minimum area. In general, the maximum potential habitats of 18 warm evergreens were projected according to RCP 8.5 scenario in 2050 and RCP 4.5 scenario in 2070. Spatiotemporal changes in coldest quarter precipitation according to climate change scenarios account for the variations in future projections. The results of this study will help us understand changes in the function and processes of plant ecosystem of the Korean Peninsula under climate changes and provide useful information for management practice of warm evergreens.
