This study examined which selection attributes are significantly considered when parents and children choose a family camp. This study also analyzed differences between parents and children in terms of recognizing the importance of each selection attribute. On the basis of the findings, this study sought to find factors which can make both parents and children satisfy regarding participating in the family camp. Surveys were conducted in two family camps using a convenience sampling method. The first family camp (is called “Outdoor Festival”) was held from August 7th to 9th in 2015. The second one (is called “Our family’s Fall Picnic) was from October 3th to 4th. Totally 247 questionnaires were distributed to respondents. Except for incomplete 15 questionnaires, 232 (parents: 132, children: 100) were used to be analyzed. The main findings of this study are the following. At first, factor analysis and reliability analysis were conducted for selection attributes of family camps. The factor analysis found 8 factors including ‘Camp Staffs’, ‘Facilities’, ‘Camp Programs’, ‘Locations’, ‘Experience Preference’, ‘Food’, ‘Education’ and ‘Economics.’ In order to find importance and satisfaction of the selection attributes, IPA (Importance-Performance Analysis) approach was employed. The findings indicated the following. 1) High importance-high performance area (i.e., keep up the good work quadrant; 1st quadrant) included factors about ‘Camp Staffs (i.e., ‘Staff clearly interested in children’ and ‘Friendly staff’)’, ‘Experience preference (i.e., ‘Fun & relaxing experience’)’, ‘Facilities (i.e., ‘Clean facility’)’ and ‘Education (i.e., ‘Values-based camp’ and ‘Explicit teaching of values’)’. 2) High importance-low performance area (i.e., concentrate here quadrant; 2nd quadrant) contained a factor regarding ‘Facilities (i.e., ‘Showers provided’)’. 3) Low importance-low performance area (i.e., low priority quadrant; 3rd quadrant) included factors for ‘Camp programs (i.e., ‘Waterfront activities’)’, ‘Location (i.e., ’Located close to home’ and ‘Located close to a lake’)’, ‘Experience preference (i.e., ’Meet other families’and ‘Knowing someone at camp’)’, and ‘Economics (i.e., ’Cost’ and ‘Discount with membership’). 4) Low importance-high performance area (i.e., possible overkill quadrant; 4th quadrant) covered no common area. The results for analyzing the differences of IPA between parents and children are the following. With respect to the selection attribute of ‘Camp staffs’, while parents presented the factor of ‘High staff to camper ratio’ on the ‘Keep up the good work quadrant (i.e., 1st quadrant)’, children indicated it on the ‘Possible overkill quadrant (i.e., 4th quadrant). In terms of the ’Camp programs’, parents marked ‘Variety of age-appropriate activities’ and ‘Freedom to choose activity’ on the ‘Concentrate here quadrant (i.e., 2nd quadrant), but children represented those on the ’Keep up the good work quadrant (i.e., 1st quadrant). For the ‘Facilities’, while parents presented ‘Restrooms provided’ on the ‘Keep up the good work quadrant (i.e., 1st quadrant)’, children marked it on the ‘Concentrate here quadrant (i.e., 2nd quadrant). With reference to the ’Food’, parents expressed ‘Quality/taste of food’ on the ‘Concentrate here quadrant (i.e., 2nd quadrant), however, children located it on the ’Keep up the good work quadrant (i.e., 1st quadrant). Finally, regarding the ‘Location’, while parents indicated ‘Reputation of camp’ on the ‘Possible overkill quadrant (i.e., 4th quadrant)’, children marked it on the ‘Low priority quadrant (i.e., 3rd quadrant)’. Based on the findings, this study proposed some practical and effective implications to practitioners for the invigoration of family camps.
