In this retrospective study, electronic medical records were analyzed to understand the characteristics of female patients hospitalized in a burn center because of industrial injuries. The subjects were 222 female patients aged 19 years and older who were taken to the center for acute burn injuries because of industrial accidents between January 1, 2012 and December 31, 2014. Data were collected by using a questionnaire composed of questions about demographic characteristics and burn-related characteristics(size and depth of burn, area of burn, type of treatment, the route of admission and length of stay, type of burn, cause of burn). The collected data were analyzed in terms of frequencies and percentages by using SPSS21.0. This study findings are as follows. Many of the subjects were in their forties and fifties. Regarding burn-related characteristics, most subjects showed burns with an area of less than 10% of the body surface, with a severity of second degree, and located in the lower limbs. Scalding burns were the most frequent, with the main cause being spilling of hot food or soup. Contact burns were usually of third-degree severity and occurred on hands and wrists. The main cause was being caught in between or pressed by press machines, the type of treatment was usually surgery, and the length of stay was usually long term, ranging from 31 to 60 days. Of the types of burns, flame burns affected the largest body surface area. They frequently occurred on the face and mainly caused by explosion of a stove or kitchen gas. Chemical burns frequently occurred on the lower limbs and mainly caused by chemical spills or explosions. Thus, female workers are easily exposed to the hazards of burn injuries in industrial accidents, and the risk factors for the burn injuries differ depending on the workplace conditions. Therefore, preventative measures for burn injuries should be established in accordance with the characteristics of each industry to which female workers belong. Safety and health training regarding first aid for burn injuries should also be conducted so that workers can immediately perform the appropriate first aid when they are injured at work.
