This study aimed to investigate the meanings of self-supervision for improving the operation of free choice activities in the area of science and analyze the process of a teacher's self-supervision for improving the operation of free choice activities in the area of science and the resultant changes among the teacher and young children. On this basis, the ultimate purpose of this study was to suggest the meanings of self-supervision performed by early childhood teachers themselves and present courses and plans for improving the operation of free choice activities in the area of science. For this purpose, the following questions were set: First, what is the process of self-supervision performed by an early childhood teacher to improve the operation of free choice activities in the area of science? Second, what changes does the teacher show in the process of self-supervision for improving the operation of free choice activities in the area of science? Third, what changes are observed among young children in the process of self-supervision for improving the operation of free choice activities in the area of science? This study was conducted in 23 children in the Namu Class for five-year-olds at Y Nursery in Seoul for about five months from March 9 to August 28, 2015. A teacher, the researcher, and 23 children in the Namu Class participated in this study and the photos of the free choice activities in the area of science, the journals kept by the teacher, the observations and records of children's activities, the records of the frequency of participation in the area of science, and the documents were collected and analyzed. According to Kim's (2006) analytical procedure, the journals kept by the teacher, the observations and records of children's activities, the records of the frequency of participation in the area of science, and the documents were scanned and analyzed to find and record key words and contents. The key words recorded over all the stages were categorized to make a list of primary categories, which was then reinterpreted to find the meanings of categorical data, review the data according to the established themes, and reconstruct them in the cyclical process of selecting and classifying meaningful data continuously. To make this study reliable and valid, I used triangulation continuously reviewed by my supervisor, who knew the direction and purpose of this study well. The results obtained through this process were presented in terms of the process of self-supervision and the changes among the teacher and children as follows: First, the process of my self-supervision involved reflecting upon my science education, making efforts to invite children to the area of science, getting knowledge about operation of the area of science through self-learning and lessons at graduate school, changing the environment in the area of science to induce children to participate in the area, providing scientific materials and tools to promote scientific interest and inquiry, creating the area of science to love and care animals and plants, and discovering the meanings of improvement in the operation of the area of science through personal participation in the area and interaction. Such a process of self-supervision was implemented in the cycle of stages: to check and recognize problems, to make a plan for improving the problems, and to implement the plan. Second, as for the teacher's changes during the process of self-supervision for improving the operation of free choice activities in the area of science, the teacher was more likely to make critical thinking of and recognize the operation of the area of science and got positive attitude toward, and confidence in, the activities in the area of science. Besides, the teacher came to enjoy a quest for knowledge related to the area of science. Third, as for children's changes during the process of self-supervision for improving the operation of free choice activities in the area of science, they became more interested in the area of science, participated more frequently in the area, enjoyed experiments, and became more inquiring. They made scientific play in daily living as well as in the area of science and enjoyed scientific activities together with peers, teachers, and family. Besides, they got positive perception of science. The research on the meanings of self-supervision of early childhood teachers for improving the operation of free choice activities in the area of science is significant in that the area of science neglected by both children and teachers, compared with other interesting areas, has been activated through the process of the teacher's self-supervision. During this process, both the teacher and the children came to positively perceive science and the scientific area. Therefore, such a process of early childhood teachers' self-supervision is effective in improving the operation of the area of science and this study is significant in that it has presented and examined a practical plan for operating and improving the area of science, which is applicable to educational sites and can be an effective plan in early childhood education practice.
