Propellers get rotational power from reciprocating engine or turboprop engine and generate the thrust required for propulsion of an aircraft. Recently, due to the increased interest in mid/low-altitude unmanned aircrafts, research on performance estimating for propeller has been actively carried out again. However, the selection of the propeller fit for a newly designed vehicle are mostly based on the aerodynamic performance prediction using the BEM theory or just empirically on the criteria fit for the vehicle propulsion. In this study, as a basic stage of the optimal design, the steady-state analysis of rotational flow around a propeller was carried out based on the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations using the rotating coordinate system. The result was verified through comparing with the corresponding wind-tunnel test one from the NACA report No. 642. And then the design optimization of the aerodynamic shape of propellers were carried out using RSM(Response Surface Method). The current design optimization procedure consists of propeller shape design using the CATIA, mesh generation using GAMBIT and TGRID, CFD flow analysis using FLUENT and numerical optimization using RSM, respectively. A nominal design was selected as one of the conventional propellers, 5868-9. A design optimization problem was formulated to achieve highest propeller efficiency using three design variables; solidity, pitch angle, and advance ratio. First of all, numerical optimization was carried out using only two design variables, solidity and pitch angle, for the verification, which result was confirmed by comparing with the wind-tunnel test one of the NACA report No. 642. Next, the formulation included one more design variable, advance ratio, to find the optimum shape among wide operational range and shape variations. More diverse shape design variables could be included in the current design optimization procedure built in during this study to achieve better performance of a propeller, for example, shape changes of the blade section or changes of the twist angle along radial positions of blade and so on.
