Recently, embryo cryopreservation technique became an important part of assisted reproductive technology(ART). Slow-freezing has been used as a good way for storage of embryos. But, slow-freezing has several disadvantages in time-effectiveness, cost-effectiveness, blastocyst formation, and etc. Vitrification has many advantages including simplicity and time-effectiveness. Also, vitrification is superior to slow-freezing in terms of survival rates of cryo-thawed embryos. The aim of this study was to investigate the differences in clinical outcomes between slow-freezing and vitrification. And this study suggests direction for better cryopreservation method through the differences in clinical outcomes. This study had been conducted from 2009 to 2014 in Seoul women's hospital, Incheon, Korea. 839 cycles were cryopreserved by either slow-freezing (152 cycles) or vitrification (687 cycles). Cryopreservation of embryos were performed by either conventional IVF or ICSI. Two of cryopreservation were used cryo-straw(0.25ml). Vitrification was performed using cryoprotectant which consisted of Dimethyl sulfoxide(DMSO), ethylene glycol and sucrose. On the other hand, slow-freezing cryoprotectant included ethylene glycol and sucrose without DMSO. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS software. Also, a P value of <0.05 was considered to be statistically significant. In this study, A total of 5,143 embryos were cryopreserved by either slow-freezing or vitrification. There was no significant difference in patient characteristics between slow-freezing and vitrification groups. 650 embryos were transferred to slow freezing method (152 cycles, 4.3±1.2) while 2,067 embryos were subject to vitrified embryo transfer. (687 cycles, 3.0±1.0) According to this study, vitrification shows better clinical outcomes than slow-freezing. In this study, vitrification yields better embryo survival rates of cryo-thawed embryo transfer compared with slow-freezing. For this reason, vitrification shows higher clinical outcomes compared with slow-freezing. Therefore, vitification is considered as an effective embryo cryopreservation method.
