Reverse electrodialysis (RED) is ocean energy harvesting technology to generate energy from the mixing of concentrated salt solutions (e.g., sea water) and diluted salt solutions (e.g., river water) with different salinity. The RED stack is comprised of an alternating arrangement of cation-anion-exchange membranes (CEMs) and anion-exchange membrane (AEMs) between two electrodes that selectively transfer anions and cations. Normally, the divalent cations (i.e., Ca2+ and Mg2+) or natural organic matters (i.e., humic acid, fulvic acid, etc.) are contained in sea water and river water, respectively. The divalent cations of sea water result in a decrease in the performance of RED simply by increasing the membrane resistance. The humic acid, which in the most frequently found as natural organic matter, shows different adsorption characteristics with the type of anion-exchange membranes which has different surface morphology (or roughness). This study is to understand the effect of membrane fouling phenomena with respect of the property of anion-exchange membranes in RED. Adsorption tests, electrical resistance measurement experiments and RED operations were carried out to verify whether membrane fouling influences the factors to increase electrical resistance. CEMs showed an increase in electrical resistance due to divalent ions existed in concentrated salt solutions. As expected, Mg2+ showed greater resistance than Ca2+. However, AEMs showed an increase in electrical resistance due to humic acid existed in diluted salt solutions. Divalent cations showed fouling membrane phenomena in CEMs, but showed different fouling membrane phenomena with permselectivity of AEMs used in this study. KIER AEM 6-2 supplied from Korea Institute of Energy Research (KIER) could decrease the membrane fouling for CEMs than KIER AEM 1-2 due to higher permselectivity. In addition, the adsorption of humic acid was different with respect to the surface morphology of AEMs. The preferred adsorption equilibrium occurred in Fujifilm AEM with the most rough surface; on the other hand, the KIER AEMs with much smoother surface showed lower adsorption behavior. Both showed the better fitting results in Frendlich adsorption isotherm than Langmuir one. Thus it inferred that the former is suitable for the humic acid adsorption of the two AEMs. To analyze the results based on RED runs, Fujifilm AEM showed a greater decrease in OCV and power than the KIER AEM 6-2. In could be concluded that the control of the property of anion-exchange membranes in RED is able to mitigate inorganic and organic fouling phenomena effectively.
