Reverse electrodialysis (RED) uses energy derived from the difference between the chemical potentials of concentrated and diluted salt solutions. When the number of cells are high enough, the sum of cell-pair voltages exceeds the electrode reaction potentials, and useful power may be obtained from leads to the electrodes. The power and potential generated from RED is disrupted by activation overpotential and ohmic overpotential arising from important materials of RED such as ion-exchange membranes, electrodes. In this study, much efforts are devoted for the development of ion-exchange membranes with low ohmic resistance in ion-exchange membrane systems and porous electrodes with low activation overpotential in electrode systems. An electrode system for RED is a key component to determine the overall performance. In general, systems with dimensionally stable electrodes and a supporting electrolyte with the reversible Fe(CN)64− / Fe(CN)63− redox couple are often used. For better performance, power density, the activation overpotential arising from electrode reactions is necessary to be minimized as much as possible. Various electrode materials such as Au, Vulcan supported Pt, Activated carbon, Carbon nanofiber, Vulcan with the same redox couple Fe(CN)64− / Fe(CN)63− were investigated for RED. The platinum coated titanium and iridium-coated titanium as metal electrode and vulcan-coated on graphite foil were investigated with the same redox couple Fe(CN)64− / Fe(CN)63−. The electrochemical behavior of the electrode materials was measured by using cyclic voltammetric techniques, and voltage in the RED stack was measured in two and four electrode systems. From the results of cyclic voltammograms for various electrode materials such as Au, Vulcan supported Pt, Activated carbon, carbon nanofiber, Vulcan, the Vulcan electrode showed the lowest activation overpotential. The cyclic voltammograms for the Vulcan electrode confirmed very good electrochemical reversibility and kinetic behavior. In the RED stack experiment, the vulcan coated graphite foil electrode showed the lowest activation of overpotential for a Fe(CN)64- / Fe(CN)63- redox couple solution among the electrodes tested in this study. The vulcan electrode is the most promising electrode material for reverse electrodialysis. An ion-exchange membrane system for RED is also a key component to determine the overall performance. Recently, pore-filling membranes are intensively being studied for several applications such as fuel cells since they are able to have extremely low resistance due to thin thickness (20~50 um) and good mechanical stability due to a porous substrate. In this study, the pore-filling anion-exchange membranes were prepared using a polyethylene porous substrate. Monomers were filled in the substrate and crosslinked under heating. Afterward, quaternization was carried out to attach ion-exchangeable functional groups to polymer backbones. Seven types of pore-filling anion-exchange membranes successfully prepared with no defects. Commercially available AMX and pore-filling anion-exchange membranes were applied in the RED. The platinum coated titanium as metal electrode and vulcan-coated on graphite foil were investigated and compared by current voltage polarization measurements. Voltage in the RED stack was measured in two and four electrode systems. The open circuit potentials of reverse electrodialysis were highly dependent upon permselectivity of the membranes. The ionic resistance of the seven types of pore-filling anion-exchange membranes was much lower than that of commercially available AMX. The current-voltage relationship for the pore-filling anion-exchange membranes was shown to be better than that for the AMX membrane. As a result of the performance, the CASE 4 of the seven types of pore-filling anion-exchange membranes tested in this study showed the highest maximum power density. Finally, the performance of the Vulcan - CMX / CASE 4 was shown to be almost the same compared to that of the Pt – CMX / AMX. Thus, much cheaper materials for electrodes and ion-exchange membranes developed in this study could be used for reverse electrodialysis. Further, the durability study of the new materials should be studied.
