Nature has been a subject of worship in literature, throughout the history of mankind. However, only relatively recently have writers or literary persons predicted the environmental crisis, become conscious of human-centric worldviews and begun accusing. In this era of environmental crisis, writers and poets are increasingly expressing concern over, and interest in, the environmental challenges faced by society. Therefore, in the 21st century the environment is an important theme for natural science researchers as well as those in the humanities. The purpose of this research is to explore the ecological consciousness or environmental consciousness present in the works of three poets from England and the United States: Percy B. Shelley, Robinson Jeffers, and Gary Snyder. Today, Shelley is said to be an anarchist; Jeffers is said to be a radical inhumanist; and Snyder is said to be an environmental activist and post-humanist. However, examining these closely, it can be seen that they all raised questions on Anthropocentrism in some way or another through their works and activities, despite the gaps in time and space among them. This paper analyzes the ecological consciousness and practice of the 19th century British Romantic poet Shelley, 20th century American poet Jeffers, and 21st century Snyder in terms of Ecocriticism. The focus is on the point that the humanistic malt for solving environmental problems is present organically in both their life and literature. Chapter 2, titled as “Shelley: The Ecological Imagination and Poet’s Responsibility for Ecological Practice”, covers the ecological consciousness and practice of Shelley, who is the earliest chronologically. This involves looking for evidence of the ecological consciousness of Shelley, and his lifestyle provides important insight and exerts an influence on the modern perspective. Chapter 3, titled as “Jeffers: The Practical Meditation on Nature of the Deep-ecological Inhumanist”, continues the discussion focusing on the ecological consciousness and practice of Jeffers. This research discuss “anti-humanism”, revealing the central idea of Jeffers, from a perspective different from the conventional interpretation of a denial of being human. Chapter 4, titled as “Snyder: The Practice of a Post-humanist for Ecological Coexistence”, covers the ecological consciousness and practice of Snyder as a post-humanist. In conclusion, this research re-evaluates and outlines it in accordance with the purpose of this study to seek solutions of humanities on the continuum of environmental problems through the ecological consciousness and practice of Shelley, Jeffers and Snyder; or in the core value that deep ecology as a branch of ecological criticism advocates has its roots in the imagination of Shelley. This research explores their ecological consciousness through their ecological vision by examining the poets’ Anthropocentrism and Shelley’s revolutionary romanticism that wants to see nature as the beings that coexist with humans by escaping from the viewpoint that human being is the center of existences Jeffers’s anti-humanism arguing that we should overcome the viewpoint that human being is the center of the world; and Snyder’s de-humanism taking the position that human beings and other creatures should coexist in the 21st century. This paper attempts to assess the roles and responsibilities of poets in the formation of the ecological critique which was noted by all of these poets and to emphasize their influences, which have been sustained to date. The relatedness of the in-depth ecological reasons shared between America and Britain beyond time and space can be viewed through this dissertation. When it comes to environmental issues, humanities should bear the problem of the environmental perceptions of the public in mind. It is an important duty as a researcher to address changes for the future and identify the figures that show it in their works and life. Among the writers of English Literature, Shelley, Jeffers, and Snyder can be said to be key figures in that they advocated moving towards a better world and showed practical commitments. This research examines the ecological consciousness of the three figures as post-humanists who sequentially influenced the development of ecocriticism and find what they have in common. The focus of this study is on revealing their roles as theoreticians as well as the values demonstrated by their lifestyles. I hope that the paper will serve as an alternative that goes one step further towards overcoming today’s environmental crisis.
