This study investigates the combustion and exhaust emissions characteristics in an ammonia-gasoline dual fueled SI-engine. Because ammonia produces only nitrogen and water when it is burned, it doesn’t produce any carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, and this point makes it differ from fossil fuels. Another benefit of using ammonia is that it can be stored and supplied by LPG infra since it is easily liquefied when pressurized with the pressure of over 0.7MPa. However, because the heat value of ammonia is 18.8(MJ/Kg-fuel) which is about 44 percent of that of gasoline and the flame propagation speed of ammonia is slow, it is difficult to apply ammonia to the mass-produced gasoline engines. This paper examines the combustion of ammonia and gasoline fuel with a 1-litter gasoline engine under various mixture ratio. As ammonia ratio based on LVH(%) increases, the ignition time was needed to be advanced more by approximately 20 degree and the emission of the combustible ammonia increased when the ratio of the ammonia exceeds approximately 70 percent, by heat values. The level of maximum torque of engine was maintained with ammonia mixture ratios up to 70~80%, according to each operating area. In addition, the amount of carbon dioxide and the combustible hydrocarbon decreased sharply as the ammonia ratio increases. The amount of nitrogen oxides varied by the operating condition but it was smaller than that of gasoline under the optimal condition. Nevertheless, the amount of ammonia emission increased as the ammonia ratio increases, therefore, the development of the efficient oxidation catalyst is required.
