The history of creative dramas is now over 100 years long. Creative dramas, as opposed to translated dramas, refer to dramas written by domestic writers and performed by domestic directors in order to overcome the unavoidable foreignness to the domestic audience in translated dramas regardless of how great they are, to accommodate and localize the old theatrical aesthetics of Western plays, which has developed mainly centering on the stage, and to express domestic issues in domestic play writers’ methodologies.
From the viewpoint of Western stage dramas, the history of creative dramas in Korea may not be long enough to have methodologies of unique color. Now in the 21st century when the material basis of theatrical performance in Korea is as solid as that in the Western world along with the development of digital civilization and improved foreign language skills, however, it can be a somewhat narrow view to say that creative dramas are still under the influence of Western plays. What is more, such a narrow view may be overcome by identifying certain unique streams of domestic plays and theorizing the trends while admitting the existing influence of Western plays.
Starting from this idea, this study purposed to examine how a trend of creative dramas in the 2010s was exposed by , a creative drama written and directed by the present author, as a specific case helpful to understand the trend of creative dramas in the 2010s.
Creative drama provides a good example in that digital civilization has advanced, people’s general foreign language skills have been improved, and the audience does not distinguish between creative and translated dramas any longer. This is true particularly because the drama adopted a foreign story as its direct material, the characters were foreigners but acted by Korean actors without any aid, the actual background event of the drama and a fictional story based on the event were juxtaposed simultaneously so that the audience might think about the gap between the story and the reality, and the use of the a global event as the motive of the drama induced the audience to think about contemporary civilization and Korea from a macroscopic viewpoint.
This paper consists of four chapters. Chapter II reviewed the outline of the work that reminded the audience dramatically of the vicious cycle of terrors by Islamic militant groups and capitalist countries’ violent counterattacks, which are present global problems despite the heterogeneous elements such as the somewhat heavy theme consciousness and Korean actors’ performance of an American story, based on the motive and time of playwriting, the finalized scenario, the intentions of the work described in the press releases, the process of theatrical production, and the names of performance participants and groups, and critics’ evaluations after the performance. Then, in comparison of a previous study by Choi Seong‐hee, the characteristics of were examined in terms of story, plot, storytelling, and meanings.
Chapter III examined how these characteristics were implemented specifically through the process of playwriting. With regard to the playwriting of the text, this chapter presented the selection of writing methodology overlapping materials, fictional stories, and actual incidents collected during the writing, relationships among the characters appearing in the fictional stories, conflicts between main characters Bill and Will, the layers of confrontation, etc. and examined how they were treated.
In the reconstruction, for the more effective composition of dramatic structure based on experts’ criticisms after the reading of the first draft completed in this way, reference materials were reinforced after a field survey and the process of contracting the characters was presented through establishing the story space of the U.S., supplementing the prehistory (前史) of the characters, and changing Korean Americans to Arabian Americans.
Then, what was brought by the shock intended by the result of the performance was examined. In the process of direction, supplements to shortcomings found in the first performance based on the first draft were presented through the final acting script prepared by deleting the scene of Bill with his colleagues during his young days appearing in the later part of the drama, having Billy, the phantom of Bill, assume the role of David appearing in a dream, replacing the quotations in Bill’s words in the 1st scene, which was somewhat overloaded with many quotations, with Korean words, and adding the alternative of pursuing an ethical life to Will’s position.
In addition, the process of repeat performance was examined together with performance photographs by combining the elements above with stage, lighting, image, music, sound, costume, and makeup that could be controlled through direction.
Chapter IV Conclusion summarized general characteristics observed in the processes of playwriting and direction of , and presented contents and forms observed in creative dramas during the 2010s and their meanings based on the case of for future research.
