Korean people has been called Doing-Yijok from old times, which has meant the ethnic group having skilled archery in the east of China. The history of bow of Koreans competent in dealing with it began from Gojoseon, and it had been important as a weapon with which a nation can be protected from the Three States to the Joseon period. In the Joseon period when Confucianism was selected as the national policy, the bow was used for ceremony events of by royal family, such as Gunrye and Hyungrye or royal gift given to people who showed good performance in Gukyeok in which castles and royal tombs were constructed, and subjects who gained high score in Sarye. On the other hand, men of noble families also enjoyed the archery as one of the Yukryes which means six kinds of training of body and mental. Technology for manufacturing the bow, an important weapon for protecting the nation was also developed early, so Koreans had made it from ancient times to the middle ages. Furthermore, in the Joseon inheriting superior manufacturing techniques from Silla and Goryo, various kinds of bows including Gakgung were created. The Gakgung is the representative bow in Joseon, which consisted of 7 materials, such as horn of water buffalo, tendon of bull, fish glue and so on, most of which are organic matters and therefore are characterized by lack of extant relics. Thus, this paper examined the historical vicissitude of the bow through some literatures, such as Chronicles of Three Kingdoms as well as Gaolitujing and Analls of Joseon Danasty. The form, size and manufacturing process of the bow was were investigated through Sejongsilok-Orye, Gukjo-Oryeui in early Joseon; Gukjosok-Oyre, Gyeongmogung-Uigwe and Chungwantong-go in late Joseon; and Daehanyejeon in the period of Great Han empire. In addition, the Uigwe(of craftsmen who made the bow in late Joseon was analyzed, and craftsmen who served for long time and their transmission processes by period were also examined. Finally, the manufacturing technique of Gakgung in the Joseon period, which has been transmitted as an intangible cultural asset is verified through the late Kim Pakyeong(Gungjang), an important intangible cultural heritage and Ju Jangeung(Gung-in), Chungnam intangible cultural heritage, who inherited the former's skills. The findings can be summarized as follows: First, the bow had been a weapon used for protecting nation, as well as a tool for representing legitimacy of the throne and learning the etiquette from ancient time to Joseon period. And also Lee Seong-gye who found Joseon was a military commander with outstanding archery in Goryo. Hence, kings of Joseon royal family emphasized the archery and men of noble families also recognized it as one of Yukryes which was important for training of body and mental. Second, the Joseon royal family used the bow to make the ceremony events impressive. The Gakgung made of horns and tendons of bulls was for Gunrye; the bow decorated with gold threads for design; and the Jukgung consisting of bamboos for Hyungrye. In particular, the royal family appointed those competent in the archery by holding Dae-Sarye in the royal palace and Hyang-Sarye in local areas, in order to encourage it. Third, the craftsmen who make the bow in late Joseon were recruited by Dogam which was temporarily built for Orye events of the royal family. Gung-ins and Gungjangs were recorded in the Uigwe. From 17th to 19the century, Gungjangs worked to manufacture the bow for Gunrye or Jeongdae-up in Dogam, such as Garye, Chaekrye and Bumyo. I particular, it is notable that Gungjangs, craftsmen who had belonged to authorities, such as Gungisi or Sang-uiweon were recruited by Dogam. Some of Gungjangs conscripted into Dogam for long periods, from 17th to 19th century are recognized to form the families of craftsmen who were proficient in manufacture of the bow. Fourth, the manufacturing technique of traditional Gakgung which has been transmitted can be understood through craftsmen, intangible cultural assets. The late Kim Pakyeong's and Ju Jangeung's works were compared to show that there are differences in materials of Goja, concentration of fish glue, skills and so on. For the materials of Goja, the former used traditional mulberry tree, while the latter replaced it from acacia tree; for the fish glue, the former applied thin paste many times, but the latter daubed it one or two times and extracted moisture, so he complemented the function of Gakgung vulnerable to humidity. Thus, this paper examined the transmission of Gakgung technique in Joseon period, by investigating records in literatures and craftsmen's skills. The findings show that the existence of Gungjang was verified, which has not been studied, and materials of Gakgung and manufacturing techniques of craftsmen, intangible cultural assets have been transmitted from the tradition of the Joseon period. But excavation, dating and scientific research of Gakgung relics of the Joseon period, which currently exist in museums will be tasks for future studies. In addition, this paper is expected to contribute to research methodology of traditional crafts in the Joseon period or studies on craftsmen, intangible cultural assets.
