More and more people have been showing their interest about mobility assistive devices to assist elders walking ability. However, a problem which hinders operating convenience occurs by decrement of driving force from user’s walking aids when using a rollator, a type of mobility assistive devices. In this study, a power assist method of improving operating convenience based on input currents supplied to the motors is presented. The driving force reduced by outer force from a user through input current to the motors is estimated to implement the proposed method, and an algorithm which compensates driving force for currents reduced by user’s outer force is proposed. To demonstrate utility of the power assist method suggested in the paper, we experimented in a flat area with a length of 4 meters and standardized the current measured by applied PWM for verification. As a result, the current supplied to the motor before applying the power assist method reduced 195.64mA on average. However, we confirmed that the current increased 64.95mA on average after using the proposed method. Also, the transit time after applying the algorithm was reduced to about 51.22% compared to the transit time without the algorithm. As a result, we confirmed that the driving force distracted by outer force was assisted and stabilized when using the power assist method. Through the experiment, we expect that user’s operating convenience will be improved.
