Marriagemigrant women's identity forming and contesting identity : Focusing on Filipino marriage-migrant women원문보기

Based on a critical mind of the main discourse in Korean society which is to conceal the internal diversity and dynamism of married immigrant women by limiting their lives to the area of 'raising children and family reproduction', this study aims to examine the process of re-formation of identity and assimilation based on interviews with them. Targeting 'working' married immigrant women from Philippines, this study conducted the in-depth interview and focus group interview. To analyze the identity of married immigrant women, this study selected three analysis methods like below. First, under the supposition that identity would be composed multiply, the identity of married immigrant women was viewed in the aspect of gender/ethnic/class identity. Second, based on the class/ethnic/gender identity frame, it diachronically analyzed how the identity of married immigrant women has been recomposed after moving into Korea. Third, it examined the competing aspect of identities surrounding married immigrant women in the social space of work, home, and Korean society, and also what types of strategies were used by married immigrant women to form their identity. Regarding each period of immigration, the identity of married immigrant women was fluidly changed while the vacuum of 'roles' given by Korean society was continuously generated. Even though married immigrant women were considered to have the identity of 'assimilation', actually, the identity of married immigrant women was continuously attempting resistances within the identity of 'assimilation'. At the same time, the exclusion strategy based on the racial/ethnic hierarchy generating in the moment when married immigrant women assimilated to Korean society, had influence on the formation of identity of married immigrant women. In the competing aspect of identities, married immigrant women had competitions between ethnic/gender/class identities in spaces like work, home, and Korean society. At work, the ethnic identity was working as a discrimination mechanism and also a survival strategy at the same time while compromising between the current class status and the class identity before immigration. At home, forming the ethnic identity as a strategy to resist the patriarchism, they experienced the downward marriage by feeling gaps between the class identity before immigration and husband's class status. Also, in the area with overlapped work and home, married immigrant women were compromising with the class identity by giving the gender identity superiority. Lastly, when setting up Korean society as a space, instead of selecting the identity clearly divided into 'Korean' or 'Foreigner', married immigrant women formed the hybrid identity by continuously walking a tightrope between two identities. This hybrid identity is a planning identity aiming to change Korean society and to detect the multicultural value, which is converged into the integrated identity including all the ethnic identities as 'Korean' and also their own country.
