The purpose of this study is to observe how parents and English teachers are considering and teaching English pronunciation for the elementary school students.
Pronunciation is an essential part of good communication, and should be a priority in the teaching of English.
It is believed that parents' and teachers' beliefs have to do with their instructional practices for their children and students.
The present study investigated the recognition of elementary students' parents and teachers in connection with their practices for the teaching of pronunciation.
Data was gathered through a question-based survey of English teachers and parents who have children in the third and fourth grade. All respondents reside in Gyeongi Province.
The results of this study are summarized as follows :
Firstly, the majority agreed that teaching pronunciation and communicative oriented education was very important in English education. However, they did not recognize that they were related with each other.
Secondly, the parents believed that interaction with native speakers was more necessary than teachers thought. On the other hand, the teachers considered that phonics was more necessary for the teaching of pronunciation.
Thirdly, both parents and teachers were in favor of the North American pronunciation. The native teachers who have taught are mostly North Americans.
Today, an increasing number of people around the world are using English for communication. This has led to the emergence of English as a global a lingua franca. It is beneficial for students to be exposed to different varieties of English in pronunciation, because they are likely to have opportunities to interact with other L2 speakers around the world. It is required that parents and teachers should play an important part in helping the learners perceive themselves as a legitimate user of English and therefore their children and students could become a confident English speaker.
Teaching pronunciation involves a variety of challenges. Parents and teachers do not have enough time and proper way to focus on every aspect of English pronunciation. Therefore, there should be a more balanced pronunciation contents for the communication skill.
