Gwanghwamun Plaza is the most symbolic and representative plaza in South Korea where various national, small cultural, and political events are held. However, the clash between protesters and the police as an executor of authority has resulted in injuries and even threat of death in both parties. This suggests that political acts, which is an important function and symbol implied by plaza, are suppressed or selectively accepted in Gwanghwamun Plaza. Different analyses and interpretations have been proposed regarding usage and control of the plaza. In this study, Lefebvre's theory of space production was applied to analyzing the process underwent by Gwanghwamun Plaza as a product. Theory of space production, developed by Lefebvre, views space as a product and explains how a space is produced. He argued space implies social relationship. According to his theory, space is created as a result of actions and the created space, in turn, influences activities performed on it. Lefebvre did not typically schematized the process of space production as the process varies according to the social relationships within the space. In the theory, he proposed the concepts of spatial practice, representation of space, and representational space, which produce a space based on a trialectics. He divided the space patterns according to spatial characteristics that appear in the historical flow into absolute space, abstract space, contradictory space, and differential space. In these steps, dominance of abstract space, which coincides with establishment of the capitalist system, reveals a core issue in ‘the theory of space production.’ Loss of absolute space and dominance of abstract space inevitably results in contradictory space, and differential space suggests possibility as an alternative space. Although the theory was developed in modern Europe, it is both synchronic and diachronic as a theoretical framework, and enables analysis of space as a meta-philosophy that can be applied to various spaces. In this study, the spatial change of Gwanghwamun Plaza was investigated according to the period, and the process of space production related to Gwanghwamun Plaza was analyzed based on dialectic movement of spatial practice, representation of space, and representational space. Based on the analysis, the conflicts found in Gwanghwamun Plaza were examined from the spatial viewpoint, and possible direction for future reproduction of the plaza was proposed. Yukjodaero during the Joseon Dynasty was, primarily, a space in which the ruling ideology was implemented and practiced, i.e., representation of space as a perceived space. In the Confucian society where Confucianism defined overall culture, Yukjodaero represented a monumental absolute space. During the Japanese occupation of Korea, the Japanese Empire exhaustively destroyed the symbolism of Gyengbok Palace, by constructing the government general and relocating Gwanghwamun, visually announcing the collapse of the Korean Empire and flaunting their colonial power. In the process of destroying the absolute space of the Joseon Dynasty, the Japanese mainly focused on forced representation of space. Furthermore, following modernization duringn the Japanese occupation, Gwanghwamun entered the initial stage of abstract space but still remained predominantly as an absolute space.
After being destroyed during the Korean War, Seoul came to symbolize a space of capitalistic accumulation and was recreated as an abstract space. Sejongro, which is dominated by the logic of capitalistic efficiency, became an ideological representation of space as part of economic development and also came to contain various tools to reinforce the dominant ideology. The Kim Youngsam administration planned to demolish the building that was used as the government general by the Japanese and restore symbolism of Gyeongbok Palace. In addition, in an effort to subvert the authority of Sejongro in the past, various large-scale cultural events were held in the place. This suggests that Sejongro adopted some of functions provided by a plaza and that plazas are increasingly needed. As the necessity of spaces for citizens to conduct cultural and political activities increases, the government began to plan for plazas. Seoul, based on a public opinion poll, decided several physical changes and selected the basic idea and design of Gwanghwamun Plaza from a prize design competition and turnkey design competition. As the city focused on creating a city brand as the purpose of the plaza and emphasized the 'view' and 'historicity' as main criteria, the submitted designs were also based on these factors. The winning design became the basis of today's Gwanghwamun Plaza, which has important political implications as a space, as it is closely located to Cheongwadae and directly delivers voices from political gathering and protests to the government. However, conflicts between the government and political users of the plaza arise in the process. Currently, permission is required for people to use the plaza, but, as there is room for interpretation in applying the legal criteria, Gwanghwamun Plaza is not free from the strategies of representation of space. The change from Sejongro into Gwanghwamun Plaza can be seen as a positive reproduction of a space, as a movement from abstract space to contradictory space and, eventually, to a differential space. However, discriminatory control of political acts permitted on the plaza reveals its pattern as a contradictory space. And it leads to representation of space on a more complex level, revealed by strategies to reject such representation by spatial practice, and emergence of a representational space that contains new meanings and signs through clash of these acts. The problems found in the current Gwanghwamun Plaza are political and social ones that are directly related to rights of the citizens, but have been analyzed only in fragmentary aspects. Also, even though Gwanghwamun Plaza is a space, few effort has been made to analyze it from a spatial viewpoint and examine the current issues on that basis. This study is meaningful in that it investigated the process of space production of Gwanghwamun Plaza as a space with universality from a holistic viewpoint. As an area of space production, 'landscape architecture' must be taken into account from the design stage for public spaces, so as to view more objectively and minimize problems that occur in these places.
