Light cycle oil (LCO) with high contents of sulfur and nitrogen, CoMo and NiMo sulfide catalysts supported on γ-alumina were investigated with the objective of achieving ultra-low sulfur through direct or indirect desulfurization route at relatively high temperature of 360 °C. Commercially available γ-Al2O3-supported CoMo and NiMo catalysts were compared with commercial catalyst used currently at GS-Caltex in Korea. The components and bulk structure of all catalysts were characterized by XRF, N2 adsorption and desorption isotherms, FT-Raman, HR-TEM, NH3-TPD. CoMo catalysts showed higher performance for hydrodesulfurization (HDS), compared with NiMo catalysts. Octahedrally coordinated Mo species interacting weakly with support material seem to promote the HDS performance in CoMo catalysts. Smaller stack number of Mo also enhanced the HDS performance in CoMo catalyst via improved hydrogenolysis. HDS over NiMo catalysts were not affected by acidic character of catalysts, while HDS over CoMo catalysts were significantly affected by total acidity and stronger acid sites.
