In Korea, most sewage treatment plants are currently being operated based on the activated sludge process focusing on removing organic matters. As for the activated sludge process, the ratio of removing organic matters is 90 % while the ratio of removing nitrogen and phosphorus is 30 %. It means that in spite of its high effect of removing organic matters, this process is not very efficient in removing nitrogen and phosphorus. As for the activated sludge process based on bacteria, the ratio of removing organic matters is 90 % while the ratio of removing nitrogen and phosphorus is 30 %. Since 2012, effluent standard has been toughened in Korea, which made the regulation of discharging nitrogen and phosphorus much stricter than before. With the current treatment process, however, it is hard to meet this new tougher effluent standard. Therefore, the new technology needs to be developed to increase the effect of removing nitrogen and phosphorus. Against this backdrop, we used microalgae, Chlorella vulgaris that has the high effect of removing nitrogen and phosphorus and can also be utilized for wastewater treatment in this study with an aim to increase the effect of removing nitrogen and phosphorus contained in wastewater. In addition, considering the fact that microalgae are very sensitive to light condition, we conducted the experiments on light conditions in order to enhance the waste treatment performance by using the light effectively. The light conditions for the experiment included the under different light interval and same light amount conditions. As for light conditions, we measured the amount of growth of microalgae and its ability to remove nitrogen and phosphorus, depending on the light interval and the same light amount. The result of the study found that there was no statistically significant difference in the amount of growth of microalgae and its consumption of nitrogen and phosphorus in every experiment with the same conditions of light interval (12 hr, 4 hr, 1 hr, 1 min) and the same light amount. In the case of using microalgae Chlorella vulgaris in sewage treatment plants, we conducted experiments under the conditions where the total light amount is same by adjusting light interval and light/dark cycle to raise the microalgae effect of removing nitrogen and phosphorus. However, there was no statistically significant difference in the results.
