The Effects of Critical Literacy Based Reading Class on Korean Adult Learners' Critical Reading Ability and Attitude
This study explored the effect of critical literacy-based reading classes on the critical reading ability of Korean adult learners and the learners' attitude toward these classes. In order to analyze whether critical literacy-based reading classes affect the critical reading ability of learners, preliminary evaluation and post evaluation were conducted with regard to English critical reading ability and the content of the classes was also analyzed. Moreover, so as to draw the learners' attitude toward the critical literacy-based reading classes, the study participants were asked to fill out a preliminary survey, a post survey, and a reflection journal after every class. This study conducted 10 critical literacy-based reading classes for three weeks by using English newspaper articles which targeted six housewives who were living in an apartment complex in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province. In the first class, the explanation of the basic concepts of critical literacy was delivered and preliminary survey and preliminary assessment were conducted. From the second to the ninth classes, critical literacy-based reading classes were carried out and several critical literacy reading strategies were experimented by concentrating on the writers' intentions and underlying meanings of the articles. In the last class, post evaluation and post questionnaire survey were completed. In order to analyze the critical reading ability of the learners, this study borrowed two evaluation forms of Kim Eunjoe (2007) and grading of the forms referred to the standard of Winston-Salem State University's Critical Reading Manual (2013). In addition, by transcribing the entire classes of the study and analyzing them with Freebody & Luke’s (1990) the four resources model of reading, the frequency of two dimensions of pragmatic and critical practices and its increase were identified. Particularly, the utterances of learners in critical practices were analyzed as the stages of learners' critical reading ability by taking advantage of the text analysis ability of Fairclough (1989). The following are the results of this study. First, as a result of examining the effect of critical literacy-based reading classes on learners' critical reading ability through the preliminary and post critical reading evaluation forms, the critical reading ability post evaluation score of the six study subjects was higher than the preliminary score. Moreover, as a result of analyzing the classes for the study with the four resources model of reading of Freebody & Luke (1990), the frequency of critical practice was higher in the latter part of the study period than the beginning. Second, as a result of tracing the changes of individual learner's English text critical reading ability, the participants showed various levels of reading abilities from the beginning of the study so the adult learners of this study had the capability to read texts critically. The learners displayed deeper and more diverse critical reading abilities according to the topic of texts and the instructor’s guide. Third, as a result of figuring out the attitude of the learners toward critical literacy-based reading learning, the participants had a positive attitude. They agreed on the point that the classes helped them understand texts critically and responded that they can analyze the texts in English by using critical literacy-based reading strategies in the future. They also added that reading articles from a variety of viewpoints and approaches helped them develop and it was good to listen to diverse opinions and experiences of others and sympathize with them. This study, which argues that the critical literacy-based reading classes play a positive role when it comes to adults' critical English reading ability, has the following implications. Firstly, critical literacy-based English reading classes are an excellent teaching model in promoting learners' critical English reading ability or inducing their inherent ability. Secondly, critical literacy-based reading classes are centered on students and have done away with the existing lecture style of teaching, cramming method of teaching, and classes focused on grammar and translation. Thirdly, critical literacy-based reading classes provide the opportunity to the non-native speakers of English language to look at texts as readers and not as language learners and foster the high dimensional ability to think. Lastly, the teachers of critical literacy-based classes have to be the readers who read texts critically and ceaselessly strive to analyze and assess the underlying prejudices, values, and writers' intentions of texts (McDaniel, 2004). As the first proposal for future studies, in order to objectively grade learners' English text critical reading ability, the studies that apply Korea's critical reading ability scoring standard of the Korean language sector have to be carried out. Moreover, as the second proposal, critical literacy-based classes have to take advantage of various materials such as English story books, English animations, English songs, and so on. As the last proposal, the effect of participants' values, cultural viewpoints, etc. on learners' critical reading ability has to be studied.
