The purpose of this study is to inquire the process of a child’s recovering from externalization symptoms after the loss of a mother through participating in family art therapy. To provide an opportunity for experiencing a unique discernment to the family members instead of individual viewpoint about a phenomenon, the researcher decided to perform the art therapy to intend to share the joys of drawing and emotion expose, and examined the process of their discerning the phenomenon by conversation. In addition, the researcher investigated how the participated family described their experiences and its significances, and how the therapist gave meaning to life. The study vividly uncovered their unique experience “as it was”, and analyzed its significance by the “narrative inquiry method”. Then, a total of twenty sessions of the therapy were performed once or twice in each week from January 2016 to June 2016. Each session lasted 60 to 100 minutes and the therapy hours were was adjusted according to the number of participants. The participated child’s experience story revealed that strength in “being strong to win” was a defense mechanism against an external object, an enabling tool to act as intended, and the means of providing the value of presence and relationship patterns were observed in relationships with others. Also, the child could not express the emotion of loss well due to the situation of “having two mothers”, and took a dysfunctional communication attitude such as becoming silent or pretending to ignore in a tacit rule, “be silent for each other”. The therapy allowed the family to reveal the sense of loss, to express their loving heart for the family members, and to begin to examine their hearts. The course of therapy experience enabled the child and the family to find the significances of their lives. The family members depicted their senses of loss by drawing what was not able to be expressed verbally; the drawings played the role of a messenger in enlarging their understandings for each other. In this experience, the whole family confronted and exposed their senses of loss which were unsolved in the past, and were able to accept their reality by examining their life here and now. The implication of the experience and significance was as follows. The course of the whole family’s art therapy allowed them to naturally transfer their feelings by sharing their drawings and joys. Also, by listening to stories of many individuals, the therapist experienced “awareness” of various viewpoints of the family members and received the opportunity to resolve the therapist’s countertransference. This experience proved that there was remediation in vivid stories from the narrative inquiry and the therapy allowed both the participants and the therapist to achieve enlightenment.
