CFRP has many worldwide industrial applications due to its low weight and high strength characteristics. CFRP is a composite material and is composed of carbon fibers embedded in a polymer matrix. It provides excellent resistance against abrasion, corrosion and failure due tofatigue. In particular, its demand is increasing in aeronautics, automotive and medical industry due to its characteristics superior to aluminum alloys which was once thought to be the best for certain applications. Beside this, machining of CFRP is really difficult and tricky. Most conventional machining methods are bad at machining of composites like CFRP. Several effects during its machining causes its laminates to flow off leaving uncut carbon fibers and low edge detail. Researchers around the globe are still working hard to machine this composite effectively. In present study, we have tried to drill CFRP composite effectively. This requires a good knowledge about anisotropic behavior of CFRP and characteristics of carbon fibers. A hybrid drilling process has been developed to make burr free drilling. Drilling process assisted with ultrasonic capabilities is proved to be an effective tool to overcome all those problems inherited with machining of CFRP. Various process parameters are taken into consideration like feed rate, drilling speed, tool condition, tool geometry, quality of machined hole and edge details. Optimal conditions are found after performing a series of experiments designed by using DOE. The following observations has been made. AT low feed rates, the edge detail at entry is satisfactory while reverse is true at hole exit. Tool tip angles has great influence on hole geometry. Ultrasonic drilling is helpful in minimizing the errors caused due to ordinary machining/drilling. Increasing ultrasonic frequency results in better edge details and reduces the number of uncut fibers.
