This research contemplates the culture and life of women of Goryeo and Joseon Dynasties with an aesthetic expression, with a concentration on the gisaeng, or trained courtesans. Classical literatures and advanced research found in Goryeosa(History of Koryo), Goryeodokyeong(Illustrated Travelogue of Goryeo), Samgooksagi(History of the Three Dynasties) were studied as reference for Goreyo Dynasty, and classical literature from Joseonwangjosilloc(The Chronicle of Joseon Dynasty), Seungjeongwonilgi(Daily Records of Seungjeongwon), and Ilseongloc (Journal of the rulers of Joseon) were studied as a reference. The results are as follows. To begin with, the view on womanhood was comprehended by the time period, and the standards of beauty from each time period were studied. The women of Goryeo had firm self-confidence, and coexisted in the environment of equality, whereas the women of Joseon were forced the restraints and strict standards of Confusion social ethics to live in irrationality. The standard of beauty in Goryeo Dynasty was based on serving the husband, sacrificing for the family, and having an independent viewpoint of womanhood rather than the external beauty. The elements of elegance, inner virtues, phraseology, figure, and wisdom within the housekeeping as a woman appraised the beauty of Joseon Dynasty. Secondly, the origin and culture of gisaeng of Goryeo and Joseon were studied. There exists a stance where gisaeng originates from the moonyeo (female shaman, or medium), and that gisaeng originates from mid-Silla as the Samgooksagi(History of the Three Dynasties) records “Wonhwa (youth association of Silla in practice)sacrificed.” AccordingtoLeeIk’sSeonghosaseol (An Article of Late Joseon written by Lee Ik), speculations are made that gisaeng originates from the water drawer(mujari), or the daughter of the water drawer of the post-Baekje nomads. The gisaeng of Goryeo was properly marked as a social class, and was administrated by the dimensions of the state as institutions. The gisaeng of Goryeo were catergorized by sex (Yeogi, the female gisaeng, and Namgi, the male gisaeng), and by its affiliation: gwanji was the gisaeng of the government office, and gagi was the gisaeng of a private household. There were also those who were not tied to any affiliations. The category by the legion separated the gisaeng by its location residence, and the category by function separates the gisaeng from its sexual attraction(Saekgi), and its talents in music, art and literature (Yaegi). Joseon succeeded the government institution of Goryeo. The succeeded Yeoak(female dancer and musician) specialized in music and performance, and as they added to the amusement by participating at the banquets of the court and noble families, they can be considered as the gisaeng of Joseon. Thirdly, the internal meaning of attire of the gisaeng from both dynasties, and the aesthetic characteristics of the cultural attire of gisaeng were studied. The attire of gisaeng in Goryeo Dynasty was not under a regulation, and the gisaeng could wear freely without any restrictions. The general structure of the attire was similar to the ordinary fits of the Empress, but fancifully and extravagantly decorated in the material, color, and the accessories. Towards to the end of Joseon, the jeogori(upper garment) of the gisaeng attire was shortened and tightened, and the skirt was lavishly inflated, bearing some difference from the mode of wearing of women of the common middle class homes. They also announced their presence by lavish accessories, and exposing their inner garments to draw the attention of men. Lastly, the culture of gisaeng attire is categorized into symbolic beauty, ornamental beauty, and formal beauty. Apart from the attire regulation, the symbolic beauty of Goryeo Dynasty depicts the attire of gisaeng formed with extravagant fabric, and the reddish colors also symbolized gisaeng. Fruits and flowers were used as an imagery of the gisaeng. In joseon Dynasty, the metaphorical expressions of poetry signifying the beauty as the flowers and the color red also represented the gisaeng. The ornamental beauty of Goryeo Dynasty depicted a strong impression as Bundae(white powder, and eyebrow ink) makeup allowed to emphasize the long, thin eyebrows resembling weeping willow, light skin, and red lips. The unbalanced Choomagye(a loose topknot) form of the hair itself created an ornamental effect. The fluttering headdress’ ornamental effects appealed to the sexual attraction. Through the extravagant development in cosmetic techniques of the gisaeng’s luxurious trend formed by Joseon’s social background, the cosmetics of an ordinary woman and that of the gisaeng is contrasted from one another. Gache(the braided hair to make the hair appear fuller) built the gisaeng’s image of extravagancy, jeonmo(an outdoor hat Joseon women wore when leaving the house), a symbol of gisaeng, also created an ornamental effect, and binyeo(a hairpin) resembling the form of a male genitals stimulated men’s sexual curiosity. Norigae(an ornament worn by women), the finest luxury item, was used to display oneself. The formal beauty lied on the straight silhouette flowing smoothly and flexibly in the early Goryeo. Towards to the end of Goryeo, a border between the top and the bottom appeared: the widened breast of the jeogori is shortened, along with the relatively inflated form of the skirt. The widened top, and stable and balanced silhouette when proportioned with the skirt characterize the formal beauty of early Joseon. The characteristic of late Joseon is uniquely expressed in an aesthetic form with the repetition of expansion and reduction.
