The present study is aimed to know the effect of flaxseed extract on skin moisturization. To attain the objective, this study carried out experiments: creams were made containing flaxseed extract of 1%, 3%, and 5%, respectively, and applied to the arm skins of 10 female Korean adults and the change of oil and moisture in the arms were measured 9 hours after the application. The results showed that all the experimental groups applied with the creams had higher level of moisturization than the control group, which was statistically significant. In particular, flaxseed extract 5% group showed far better moisture retention than the control group between the 3rd to 7th hour from 3 from the application(p<0.001). The comparison of moisture by content of flaxseed extract demonstrated that showed that statistically significant change occurred in both flaxseed extract 1% and flaxseed extract 5% throughout the experimental duration. Therefore, it was proved that higher level of flaxseed extract content means higher level of moisture retention and moisturization. The comparison of skin sebum showed that flaxseed extract 5% was the most effective for sebum reduction and the rest did not show significant difference. Therefore, the findings of this study are expected to help develop a moisturizer using flaxseed as ingredient, which is of high moisturization and moisture retention. This study demonstrated that flaxseed extract has a potential as ingredient for a moisturizer.
