This study aimed at exploring the meaning of overseas volunteer activities by examining how early childhood teachers who participated in overseas volunteer activities in early childhood education as part of official development assistance (ODA) adapted to a new culture. Furthermore, it also tried to find out the effect of how the teachers adapted to a new culture on their identities and the formation of their identities as an early childhood teacher. In order to phenomenologically understand early childhood teachers' adaption process to a new culture on the basis of Berry's theory of cultural adaptation strategy and Kalervo Oberg's theory of U-curve stage, six early childhood teachers who had participated in overseas volunteer activities in early childhood education of the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) were selected. Through in-depth interviews with the teachers for eight weeks, the meaning and nature of their personal experiences were explored using the qualitative research method. The results from this study on early childhood teachers' adaptation process to a new culture in overseas volunteer activities are as follows. First, in the early stage of adaptation to the local culture, the early childhood teachers participating in overseas volunteer activities in early childhood education as part of ODA were in the honeymoon phase thanks to their interest and expectation of a new culture. In addition, they made various attempts and efforts in order to adapt to the new culture, and thus they seemed to get assimilated to the local mainstream culture, Second, when the early childhood teachers conducting overseas volunteer activities were getting adapted to the local culture, they experienced cultural shock or had aggravating conflicts from cultural difference which made it difficult for them to continue the volunteer activities. They personally experienced difficulties such as psychological loneliness and slump in the process of getting adapted to the new culture. Third, after experiencing the honeymoon phase and cultural shock phase in the process of getting adapted to the new culture, the early childhood teachers entered into the phase of adaptation to the local culture. They had time in reflection and introspection and made attempts to change their existing values and perspectives, showing adaptation to the combined culture which comprises inter-cultural attitudes. In addition, the experience to get adapted to the new culture provided the teachers with the opportunity to establish their identities and the identities as a childhood teacher. The experience also brought the positive change of their acquiring new values about life. In conclusion, early childhood teachers who have experienced the adaptation process to a new culture through overseas volunteer activities enhance their multi-cultural capability, the quality every global citizen should acquire, based on the understanding and acceptance of a new culture and contribute to the integration of society by seeking the development of individuals, community and international society. In consideration of the positive aspects of early childhood teachers' experience of overseas volunteer activities, society should have interest in this matter and provide support in a policy to increase early childhood teachers' participation in overseas volunteer activities. Overseas volunteers' adaptation to a foreign culture is the most important factor in improving the efficiency of overseas volunteer activities, and therefore, a more systematic plan should be presented.
