‘다층성’은 A.J.

Increase in new forms of media is bringing forth significant changes in the way content is produced and consumed in today’s era of convergence where multiplatforming is possible. Transmedia storytelling takes OSMU (one source, multiple use), which repeats the same story over and over again across different forms of media, even farther and tells versions of the story that have evolved from the original narrative across different platforms. To that end, this study began by asking which original narratives are suitable for transmedia expandability and what the standards of determining that suitability and potential are as transmedia storytelling continues to grow as the latest trend of content production today. This study aims to prove that, through enigma-solving of the archetypicality and multilayeredness of characters that appear in original narratives, it’s possible to derive the complexity of those characters and complete the world view of the story as a whole. The study focused on the character-based transmedia expansion qualities exhibited by webtoons Misaeng and Inside Men by writer Yoon Tae-ho. Misaeng and Inside Men contrast one another in that the former is a top-down creation in which the intent of the original author is heavily incorporated and the latter is a bottom-up creation in which the original narrative is supplemented and expanded upon by subsequent transmedia creators. For the analysis of the archetypicality of characters, the study applies character functions defined by Vladimir Propp to illustrate a high potential for the hero and the false hero to appear on other forms of media. Namely, these are characters Jang Geu-rae and Oh Sang-shik on Misaeng and characters An Sang-gu, Woo Jang-hoon, and Lee Gang-hee on Inside Men. For the multilayeredness, actantial models based on Algirdas Julien Greimas’ structural semantics were analyzed for the narrative structure of surface level and profound level, identifying Misaeng as having a top-down creation flow where the solid surface level of the original narrative is maintained while the profound level becomes enriched to complement specific types of media. Analysis of the profound level of Jang Geu-rae and Oh Sang-shik from the original narrative reveals a close relationship in which each character extends the other’s desires, which is something manifested in melodramatic TV shows that deal in bromance. In Inside Men’s case, the most unique thing is the addition of a new character named Woo Jang-hoon in the story’s film version. Analysis of the profound level of An Sang-gu and Woo Jang-hoon reveals that, although the gangster and the public prosecutor represent two different classes, the two share a commonality in their desire to gain social recognition. This concurrence in the desire of the two characters manifests as a buddy movie based on a rival narrative. This disassociation of a layered narrative structure creates multithreaded character arcs and initiates the solving of the enigma not clarified in the original narrative. Questions about the characters get addressed in each type of media via enigma-solving, leading to the acquisition of complexity. The study concludes that the essence of transmedia storytelling is character storytelling based on enigma-solving inherent in the original narrative, the continued expansion of which ultimately leads to the completion of a comprehensive world view of the story as a whole. By dealing with the joys and sorrows of modern workers and even the little accomplishments in everyday life in great detail, Misaeng has completed a world view shared by the entire nation. Inside Men, on the other hand, consolidates into a hopeful world view in which characters from humble backgrounds face the truth-suppressing establishment to ultimately achieve justice. This study is significant in that it scrutinizes the latest domestic contents when most of existing studies on transmedia storytelling focus on introducing cases from overseas and specifically that it is an attempt at studying character storytelling. Subsequent studies will need to expand their scope of transmedia storytelling study to include expandability analysis from the content consumer’s perspective and content analysis advocating a full-fledged transmedia strategy from the planning stage. It is the hope of the author of this dissertation for the study to incite more in-depth discussion amongst transmedia content creators and storytelling researchers.
