The purpose of this study was to examine the meaning of early childhood teacher’s self-supervision for the improvement of operation of free choice activities in the area of art, together with the process of early childhood teacher’s self-supervision and the changing modality of teachers and young children through the self-supervision. The ultimate aim of this study was to present the meaning of early childhood teacher’s self-supervision and propose the process and operational plan for the improvement of operation of free choice activities in the area of art to early childhood teachers. For this, study questions were established as follows: First, 'How does the process of early childhood teacher’s self-supervision for the improvement of operation of free choice activities in the area of art consist of?' Second, 'What changes do young children present with early childhood teacher’s self-supervision for the improvement of operation of free choice activities in the area of art?' Third, 'What changes do early childhood teachers present with their self-supervision for the improvement of operation of free choice activities in the area of art?' Study was carried out with 22 young children of 4-5 years old at a class of an attached kindergarten in a small city in Gyeonggi-do, over a period of 4 months, from August 31 to December 22, 2015, Study participants were 1 class teacher and 22 young children at Haneul Class, and such data as participatory observation records in free choice activities in the area of art, interviews, teacher's journals, the results of pre- and post-test of teacher's art-teaching efficacy, the frequency of participation in the area of art, consultation minutes with fellow teachers, and plans of activities were collected and examined. According to the analytic procedure of Kim, Yeong-cheon (2006), collected data were analyzed with the steps of 'transcription, coding and theme creation.' The primary list of categories was made by careful reading of the transcription of filming data of actual scenes, the transcription of individual interviews with young children, and teacher's journals, and then by classifying repetitively presented vocabularies, activities, behavioral patterns, ways of thinking and events of young children and the teacher. And then, the secondary list of categories was able to be worked out and systematized through the process of hierarchical reinterpretation of contents of the primary list. In addition, in order to ensure the validity and reliability of study, the method of triangulation was used by confirming the results of study using a variety of data, methods and theories. Finally, with the help of the author's academic adviser, the results of analysis were examined and mutual relations of categories were sought and checked, together with the appropriateness of those categories with which meaningful interpretation and conclusion could be drawn. The results of the above procedures were presented as the process of teacher's self-supervision and the change of teacher and young children. Study findings are as follows: First, the processes of self-supervision, carried out by the author in this study, could be presented as 'spatial restructuring by reflecting onto the spatial expansion of art area and young children's interest, the re-composition of materials and tools in the area of art, the acquisition of knowledge on the operation of art area, the improvement into young children-directed art activities, the preparation of teaching plan to operate the area of art effectively, and the broadening of vision by means of sharing information with fellow teachers.' These processes of teacher's self-supervision rotationally repeated the processes of problem recognition, working out an improvement plan and practicing it. Second, as for the change of young children, presented in the process of self-supervision for the improvement of operation of free choice activities in the area of art, their frequency of participation in the area of art and their commitment to it increased and their unconstraint exploration of various materials and expressive potentials were promoted. In addition, they enjoyed the process of creative thinking and expression, were active in linguistic interactions with peers, and presented a positive change of recognition for the area of art. Third, as for the change of teacher, presented in the process of self-supervision for the improvement of operation of free choice activities in the area of art, her ability of self-reflective thinking and practical capability of problem-solving for the improvement of operation of free choice activities in the area of art enhanced. In addition, her ability to communicate with young children via the medium of art increased and her efficacy of art improved after carrying out self-supervision. This study on the meaning of early childhood teacher’s self-supervision for the improvement of operation of free choice activities in the area of art seems to be meaningful in that it recovered the inherent characteristic of art area in which individual's unrestraint emotions and expressions are valued more than other areas do, through teacher's self-supervision, and activated the area of art as a practical area of carrying out educational significance. In addition, via the process of self-supervision, teacher and young children positively changed their recognition and attitude towards art and the area of art. Therefore, this study is valuable in that it proposed the process of teacher's self-supervision as an effective plan to improve the operation of art area and a practical strategy of operation of art area in the actual scenes of education as well. In this vein, teacher's self-supervision can be an effective plan of operation that can be applied to the actual scenes of education.
