The purpose of this study was to examine early childhood teacher's awareness of picture book reading, carried out in classrooms, through a focus-group interview, thus working out basic data to provide a necessary educational support to early childhood teachers and grope after a plan for the enhancement of their expertise.
For this, study questions were established as follows:
1. 'What is early childhood teacher's awareness of values of picture book reading?'
2. 'What is early childhood teacher's awareness of difficulties of picture book reading?'
3. 'What is early childhood teacher's awareness of support plans for picture book reading?'
In order to get answers to the above questions, focus-group interviews with 9 former or present early childhood teachers in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do were carried out, from January 4 to February 19, 2016, by dividing them into two groups regionally. Interviews were carried out twice per group and transcribed data were 70 sheets.
Study findings are as follows:
First, regarding early childhood teacher's awareness of values of picture book reading, they regarded picture book reading as having a positive influence on the development of young children and appropriate for them. Therefore, they perceived the method of picture book reading is important. They thought picture book reading could help young children's development of language and emotion. As for the development of language, they perceived picture book reading as making young children experience various vocabularies, and helping them express their experience with words and interact each other. As for the development of emotion, they perceived their picture book reading through physical contacts as providing young children the sense of stability and revealing their diverse modalities of emotion through stories in the picture book. Regarding the method of reading a picture book, they perceived it is important for them to be well aware of the contents of the picture book and read it with various intonations and facial expressions.
Second, regarding early childhood teacher's awareness of difficulties of picture book reading, they perceived it is difficult to select an appropriate picture book, look after it, and read it to young children properly. As for the selection difficulty of a picture book, their difficulties were generally related to life themes and children's development. Regarding life themes, it was difficult for them to get a picture book which appeared in teacher's guidebooks or to procure a new book in accordance with life themes. They thought there are not many picture books for young children in facilities, which are appropriate for life themes. Regarding young children's development, they thought every child has its own level of development and it is difficult to get a picture book which is appropriate for their development levels. Regarding the difficulties of looking after picture books, they thought buying books becomes economic burden for them and there are also the fear of damage and the burden of maintaining the safety of books. If they did not buy picture books in order to avoid economic burden, picture books were insufficient for all the young children to read it. They thought picture books are easily torn out and its fragments of props easily disappear. In addition, it was difficult to change batteries for sound books. In order to avoid the damage of books, young children could read picture books only when a teacher was present. As for the safety of picture books, they regarded some books have risks for young children, and therefore they had to confirm whether it is a safe book or not. As for the difficulties of reading a picture book to young children, they regarded it is difficult for them to interact with young children, and to carry out follow-up activities. Because young children did not present expected response, teachers could not be sure of whether they read it well or not. In addition, because every child has its own desire, it was difficult for teachers to meet young children's desire appropriately. When a young child interrupts the reading with conversations, they felt it is difficult to read a book to the end. As for interactions, teachers thought consultations and supports among fellow teachers are not carried out well. As for the follow-up activities, the interest of young children changed when reading was completed, thus making teachers not be able to carry out planned activities. In addition, teachers felt time is insufficient for them to prepare follow-up activities.
Third, regarding the support plan for teacher's picture book reading, they thought it is necessary to include the contents and methods of picture book reading in their training programs. As for the contents of training for picture book reading, they thought it is necessary to work out such a training program with which they can get young children-oriented training and explaining- and guiding-related training. In addition, they wanted to be trained with diverse methods of reading of picture books, of organizing follow-up activities, and of carrying out appropriate interactions with young children.
As above, this study examined early childhood teacher's practical awareness of picture book reading, carried out in classrooms. The author hopes study findings will be used as basic data to provide a necessary educational support to early childhood teachers in their reading of picture books in classrooms, and enhance their expertise on picture book reading.
