Bang (as known as studio) in Korean society refers to a temporary space in which people with vulnerable economic base stay and also a representative place playing the role as ‘pseudo-house/home’. In particular, for the young people preparing the entry into social life who are in an unstable position in socio-economic terms, bang is considered an indispensable space they go through for obtaining independence from their parents. Bang is not only a space of condensation in which youth unemployment problems are mixed with non-regular employment problems caused by labor flexibility of Korean society deepened since the economic crisis, but also the symbolism representing unstable position of youth in the bipolarized reality of dwelling focused on the metropolitan area along with the structural in-migration of youth to the metropolitan area. With this in mind, this study intends to examine the housing experience of youth in relation with the fixed housing inequality of Korean society as well as the cultural implication of their ‘structure of feelings’ as the concomitant product of this phenomenon. To be more specific, this study aims to inquire into - 129 - through which the process the labor of youth is intervened in earnest by ruling strategy of neoliberalism represented by rapid change and ‘flexibility’ of socio-economic structure occurred in Korean society. Furthermore, this study also intends to discuss the real housing environment of youth living in bang as well as the concomitant meaning of ‘structure of feelings’ This study mainly counted on the methodology of ‘in-depth interview’ oriented to youth living in bang. In concrete, this study intended to figure out bang life experience of youth, the concomitant diverse microscopic strategy and the significance of ‘structure of feeling’, focused on housing experience (at bang) of 10 youth in-migrated to Seoul who are with different types of occupation and conditions. Moreover, this study had an intention of strengthening the interpretation result of their experience by partially deriving from press articles and some cross section of life represented in literary works. Main arguments can be summarized as follows: First, the flexibility of labor market strengthened in Korean society since the economic crisis aggravated the instability of housing condition of youth. This social condition also gave rise to “housing flexibility” of youth. In the course of modern growth of Korean society, real estate became a part of investment goods and the value increased. As a result, Korean society had to encounter residential segregation by the ownership status of housing. On the other hand, the labor flexibility deepened since the economic crisis caused youth unemployment problems and non-regular employment problems at the same time. Consequently, the elevated price of housing became uncontrollable; therefore, the youth was force to be placed in the situation of “housing flexibility” moving from one temporary space to another called bang. Second, the youth staying in the bang experiences limitations of physical management and senses in the compressive space due to the spatial characteristics of a tiny bang. These limitations are materialized in their bodies and are characterized by a sort of ‘regulation of space’ in a way. Moreover, according to the characteristics of vulnerable guarantee of privacy of bang, the residents control their behaviors as well. This kind of movement is accepted as a normatized by the people staying in bang and this aspect is more strongly - 130 - observed in women than in men. Third, a series of actions to escape from the spatial restrictions of bang do not occur in a homogenous way among the youth living in bang. This rather happens as an aspect creating symbolic segregation. The youth living in bang tends to spend their daily lives outside due to the spatial restriction of bang. However, they are obliged to pay considerable amount of costs calculated by unit of time so as to spend time outside, and this aspect also causes a sort of segregation between those who have payment ability for outer space and those who are beyond the ability. In addition, young people residing in bang intend to carry out ‘housing interior design and decoration’ activities in order to project their identity into their bang and form the ‘placeness’ in bang. This practice is interpreted as the formation of ‘topophilia’ and a movement of ‘doing-home’ aiming at expression of their identity through bang. However, this motion only ceases as a sort of ‘magical solution’ from the perspective of its basic dependence on the interior style of bang. Also, another ‘symbolic segregation’ can arise depending on the amount of invested capital and enjoyment of ‘taste’ for ‘housing interior design and decoration’. Fourth, the youth living in bang accelerates their desire for ‘home’ due to the bang life experience build-up with negative association. Nonetheless, the realistic conditions surrounding them cause split between the realization of desire and outlook on their ‘home’, and brings about particular structure of feelings. It is estimated that this split arises between the desire for ‘home’ and outlook on the constant situation of ‘homelessness’ perceived by the youth living in bang. This ‘splitted desire’ appears as an ‘emotional refugization’ in the sense that the youngsters of bang experience identify themselves with ‘refugees’. This is interpreted that the structure of feelings composed by the mediation of bang of the youth converges on the feeling of ‘resignation’. The housing space of bang is converged a concentration space of social contradiction and desire contained by the youth living in Korean society at the very moment and right here. As a result, through this analysis, this study intended to stimulate the argument on the housing, the space of quotidian life which has been neglected in the field of (media) cultural studies. Moreover, this - 131 - study intended to not only interpret the structure of feelings by the main agent of spatial experience of youth, but also focus on the study of housing as a quotidian space. Therefore, this study has implication in the sense that it drew social meanings of negative feelings prevalent in Korean society based on the analysis of experience of the youth living in the space of bang.
