The purpose of this study is to investigate the first time participation category of audience in season performance, festival, arts education programs in theater as well as seek their trigger to participation for theaters to come up with hints on how to attract first-comers and continuously increase their participation frequency. As such, for 3 weeks in last May an on-site survey was made to performance audience from National Theater of Korea, Goyang Aramnuri, and Daejeon Arts center on target as well as mobile investigation to unspecified many audiences who have watched the show for more than once simultaneously. A total of 341 people were selected for research objects, a Frequency Analysis and Cross Analysis: Chi-square test by SPSS statistical method was made. As a result of analyzing the relationship by each category with frequency analysis of total questions on the basis, in the adoption stage(interest) of the audience, there have been significant differences by each one’s show watching frequency, the type of program the initial participation took place along with its trigger, the sequence of participated program, and education level, however, such significant difference was not shown by income level. Also, everyone showed significant difference in the trigger to first participation, the order of program they participated, program types in which they choose to continuously watch the performance by their initially participated program type, however, the program type in which they decide to continuously watch the performance by their first participation trigger, their first participation program type by region(Seoul, Gyeong-gi, other provinces), and their first participation program type by survey method(on-site, mobile) did not show significant differences. This study has a great deal of significance in that the investigation of ‘The very first participation experience of the audience in performing arts’ was attempted for the first time. The implication of each theater by program type are as follows. First, ‘Season performance’ implicates that it has important impact in fanatic audience development. ‘Season performance’, which is definitely the core program of the theater, had the greatest impact in the audiences’ watching the performance, and especially peaked in groups with higher performing arts acceptance stage(interest). Therefore, this implies that in case of ‘Season performance’ program in theater, it should develop better contents and exquisitely operate the system like to seasonal(repertoire) system. Second, in the case of ‘festival’, many who experienced the program were first visitors, and that implied that first experience had the greatest impact on continuously watching the performance. Hence, the ‘festival’ program should not only be used as a method that offers the opportunity of a break-away for the audience, but also be used for converting the first visitors to regular visitors by making one further step from just attracting the audience to the theater to guiding ‘Season performance’ and ‘Arts education’ programs during the festival in order to continuously increase their participation frequency. Third, ‘arts education’ implies that it not only is an important indicator for potential audience development, but is also an important indicator in promoting the long-term fanatic audience. The more fanatic audience tended to encounter ‘arts education’ or ‘performance’ in advance, had relatively higher school education, and showed higher opportunity for ‘participation due to their majoring in arts’. Therefore, it is highly suggested that theaters activate performance-connecting type and tour educational type programs so that potential audiences or first time visitors experience the performing site. Lastly, first time participators’ experience implied that it has positive impact in their decision to continuous performance watching. For one audience to decide continuous experience through one of their experience, various factors can influence, such as satisfaction, involvement, and interest; since, in this study, ‘the audience’s first participation experience’ was equally shown to have positive impact for them to decide to continuously do so, additional research related to this issue seems to be necessary. Through this study, the positive impact of the audience’s first participation experience on audience development was assured. Above all, it was possible to understand the difference of the audience by each program by looking into programs that made the greatest impact on audience participation experience, trigger to participation, participation program sequence, continuous performance watch through program type division. Through the implications of this study, it is anticipated that theaters attract first time visiting audience and consistently increase their participation frequency to contribute in consolidating the audience base.
