This is a qualitative study of structuring and applying drama therapy program to adolescents with anger management issues. The drama therapy program was designed to help the participants to appropriately express their anger, and for the researcher to observe positive emotional, cognitive, and behavioral change. The participants were five adolescents requested to join the program by teacher who had watched them for three to five years while working in the child center located in district S. The preliminary study was done from September 2015 to January 2016, and the drama therapy program was processed from January to February 2016. The program was 90 minutes per session, twice a week, and 12 sessions in total. The researcher participated as a main therapist, and there was one assistant in addition. The drama therapy program for anger management was structured based on Sue Jennings’ EPR and Robert Landy’s Role Theory, and art, music, movie and meditation were used other than drama. Emotional, cognitive, and behavioral changes were analyzed through participants’ use of language and behavior recorded in the tape along with process evaluation done by the researcher and art works created during the sessions. Korean Adaptation of the State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory was used before and after the program to check participants’ state of anger. As a result, participants’ anger reduced after expressing anger in the drama therapy program, and the program was found to be possible means to help adolescents’ anger management. Specifically in this study, using projection in expressing participants’ high degree of anger was effective in bringing cognitive understanding and behavioral change. Moreover, analysis of sessions that aroused negative reactions from the participants was used to suggest appropriate therapeutic goals, process, and therapist’s use of language during the session. The purpose of the study was to structure and find applicability of drama therapy program helping adolescents manage their anger. The study has significance of widening the possible application of drama therapy. The program developed in the study is important that it does not only help adolescents express their anger but also provides ways to appropriately manage the anger. The researcher proposes further studies to be done to help adolescents’ anger management through drama therapy.
