This study aims to consider the practical applications of composing system of major theory of Jīngfáng's I-Ching theory, one of the Sangsu I-Ching theories flourished in Han Dynasty and how it was used in the later generations. Jīngfáng was one of most prominent members of early Sangsu I-Ching school. He has introduced the theory of five elements and devised a method to interpret the result of trigram formation divination (Gua-Yao) according to the theory of coexistence and conflict derived from the five element theory. He established the theoretical background of Sangsu I-Ching theories which were originated by mèngxǐ and jiāoyánshòu developed the theories further to make them accepted in other nations as well. Jīngfáng's I-Ching theory is most original and creative in its interpretation of Zhouyi in the light of Sangsu I-Ching theories. Also, the concepts in its theory have descended to the current generations all over the world. Most of his creative interpretations of Zhou yi such as Palgung Trigram Theory, Se-Eung Theory, Napgap Theory, Yookchin Theory, yīnyáng Yigi Theory, etc are also well preserved in the modern Liùyáo Theory and applied widely in the world today. A spinoff of 'Zhouyi,' modified in the function of Sangsu I-Ching, as we know today is the Liùyáo Theory. Liùyáo(hexagram) Theory is a study to tell fortunes with formation of hexagram that has six lines from two basic trigram configurations, three lines of primary inner trigram and another three lines of primary outer trigram. The Liùyáo Theory, together with Minglixue, is one of the most popular methods of divination among diviners today. Jīngfáng's I-Ching theory, where the Liùyáo Theory was born out of, was originated by advancements of Huang-Lao philosophy and divinations from natural and social events used in the politics of early Han Dynasty and the academic progresses in the fields of astrology, calendrical science and Sangsu I-Ching theories in the same era. During the years of foundation Han Dynasty advocated non-interference policy for the purpose of unification of the nations and maintenance of governmental administration. The Huang-Lao philosophy at first seemed to resolve the troubles of the citizens but later has been proved insufficient as a driving ideology to support the sovereignty of king when ‘the revolt of the seven countries’ broke out. Emperor Han Wudi, who had been influenced by the Confucian traditions, after the coronation tried to resolve the problems in the nation by the divination from natural events and theory of sensation between heaven and man. His resolution resulted in a rapid advancement in the fields of astrology and calendrical science and in the areas of Yin yang and the theory of five elements. Astrology and calendrical science provided major background for interpreting the divination from natural events which was one of the main trends of the time and created platform for later development of Sangsu I-Ching. Theories of Sangsu I-Ching which were introduced subsequently led the I-Ching studies of Han Dynasty. The acceptance of Sangsu I-Ching in the mainstream I-Ching society was made possible by the fact that cosmology was combined with the development of the divination from natural events and social events. Major theories of Jīngfáng's I-Ching were created in such historical background, and in one of his books called ‘Jing Fang Yi Chuan’ he explained the structure behind his theory. First, Jingfang laid out Palgung Trigram Theory in which he grouped 64 hexagrams into 8 houses and arranged the houses in the following order: Geon · Jin · Gam · Gan · Gon · Son · Li · Tae. Then, he varied formation of lines, one line at a time beginning from Soongue according to the yin yang cycle as shown in the next arranging order: Ilsae · Yisae · Samsae · Sasae · Ohsae · Yuhon · Guihon. In addition, he introduced Se-Eung Theory where he categorized the changes of zhou (zhouyi) into five elements and named the master of hexagram ‘Se’ and the counterpart of Sehyo ‘Eung.’ Se-Eung Theory was created based on Palgung Trigram Theory and has become a handy tool for divination. Se-Eung technique is a method to draw a line between the subject and the object of the divination. Second, he created ‘Napgap’ and ‘Napji,’ the attachments of five elements to each line after obtaining the hexagram. Attachments of five elements on ‘Cheongan’ and ‘Jiji’ are called ‘Napgap’ and ‘Napji’ respectively, and both ‘Napgap’ and ‘Napji’ are directly related to the theory of five elements. This was introduced as a new way of interpreting the Zhouyi by Jīngfáng. It means that interpretation of Zhouyi is possible with the principle of Yin and yang and the five elements. Third, he introduced a new item for divination which is related to Insa called Yookchin. As the five elements are acting on each line new contents for divination related to Insa are generated according to the relationship of coexistence and conflict. These new contents were called Yookchin. The theory of Yookchin with the relationship of coexistence and conflict which was introduced by Jīngfáng is used as an important method to determine the result of the divination. Another method of divination is Bibok Theory. Bibok Theory is used to add a variety of interpretations to the divination along with Se-Eung Theory. Fei(飛) represents things exposed and Fu(伏) represents things that are behind and hidden. It seems that Jīngfáng, realizing the shortage of interpretative items, intended to expand the ground for the interpretations of divinity with the new device. Fourth is the theory of five elements. Jīngfáng never limited the scope of Yinyang principle to its role of philosophical presentation but tried to extend its role as a tool that can be used for real life fortune telling. In its application he introduced cycles / ascending and descending in the divination and the changes in the Five Evolutive Phases in human life were considered as the result of divination. The most significant theory of Jīngfáng's I-Ching is the theory of five elements. Jīngfáng's I-Ching enables the interpretation of all the good and bad signs in the divination in the context of the theory of five elements. The theory of five elements translates hexagram and the lines into the language of the relationship of coexistence and conflict thereby enhancing quick and easy divination result. Historically, the main theory of Jīngfáng have been accepted in the hexagram divination books such as『Donglim』→『Yeoklimboyu』→『Yeokmo』→『Danyeokcheongi』→『Yeokeun』→『Jeungsanbokyeok』→『Bokseajeongjong』(listed in chronological order). Today, his theory is becoming popular in the field of divination and is considered as one of major academic achievement in the field. The historical achievements of Jīngfáng's I-Ching begun in Han Dynasty and lasted until modern time (in the form of hexagram divination study) but there is no evidence that the works of Jīngfáng's I-Ching were popularized during the Tang Dynasty and Song Dynasty. It seems that a trace of Sangsu I-Ching in Jīngfáng's I-Ching theory and transformed the hexagram divination books might have existed in Tang Dynasty and Song Dynasty from the fact that a systematic buildup of theories of the hexagram divination books and real life usage of divination in Ming Dynasty were discovered. Hence, academic research and application of the transformation process of Jīngfáng's I-Ching in Tang Dynasty and Song Dynasty remain as the subject for future discussions. Another challenge is to find the balanced development of the theory by adjusting the pattern of current studies of Zhouyi which are leaning too much on its philosophical aspects.
