This research aims to find out how young children use smartphones, whether their smartphone use has any significant relationship with their self control capability and cultivation of social skills, and the influence of smartphone use on young children’s self control capability and cultivation of social skills. For this purpose, the way young children use smartphones was surveyed, and the result was measured via the self control rating scale and the social skill scale. The data was collected via questionnaires distributed to 409 parents with 3-5 year old children attending 4 children education institutions in Ulsan and 27 teachers of 3~5 year old children. The collected data was analyzed via SPSS(Statistical Package for Social Science) Ver 23.0.
The study questions are as follows. 1) How young children use smartphones depending on their age and gender(when they start to use smartphones, how many times they use smartphones a day, and how long at a time)? 2) Are there any differences in young children’s self control capability and cultivation of social skills depending on the way they use smartphones(when they start to use smartphones, how many times they use smartphones a day, and how long at a time)? 3) What is the relationship between young children’s smartphone use and their self control capability and cultivation of social skills? 4) What influence does young children’s smartphone use have on their self control capability and cultivation of social skills?
The results are as follows. 1) As for the starting time, most of the surveyed children(46.7%) started using smartpones after 36 months old. Any gender difference was not found. Most children(42.2%) use smartpones once or twice a week. and 40.7% use smartpones for 21-40 minutes at a time on average. Age and gender didn't make any differences in frequency and duration. 2) The starting time and self control capability influenced their self decision, behavioral inhibition, and emotionality. The frequency and the duration showed significant differences in self evaluation, self decision, behavioral inhibition, and emotionality as well. The relationship between the starting time and their cultivation of social skills influenced their pro-social behaviors significantly. The frequency and average duration showed significant differences in sociability, pro social behaviors, and initiative as well. 3) When it comes to the influence of children’s smartphone use on their self control capability and the cultivation of social skills, children’s smartphone use has some significant correlation with all the factors of their self control capability. In other words, the lower the frequency of their smartphone use, the higher their self control capability becomes. And also in the relationship between children’s smartphone use and their cultivation of social skills, most of the variables have significant correlation. That is, the lower the frequency of their smartphone use, the higher their cultivation of social skills. 4) In terms of the influence of children’s smartphone use on their self control capability, the later their starting time is, the greater their behavioral inhibition will be by up to 10.5%. And the higher the frequency of their smartphone use, the lower their self control capability. In terms of the children’s cultivation of social skills, the more they use smartphones, the lower their cultivation of social skills becomes. and the longer they use smartphones, the lower their cultivation of social skills(pro-social behaviors and initiatives) is.
This research is meaningful in that some significant correlation between children’s smartphone use, their self control capability and their cultivation of social skills was identified; and also, the influence of children’s smartphone use on their self control capability and the sub factors of their cultivation of social skills was found.
