This research aims to understand the flow of domestic popular music
industry and find ways to develop the industry in the future. To
accomplish this, direction that Korean popular music industry should be
headed in was sought after through SWOT analysis based on the US and
Japanese popular music industry's status quo and their success cases.
The numbers and the data that were used for this research were from
five-year cumulative data of Korea Creative Content Agency. The data
was restructured and used to understand and research the flow of popular
music industry. As the amount of research done on the popular music
industry is low compared to other popular industries, related articles were
cited in order to understand the status quo and recent issues.
Accordingly, here are the conclusions of this research for the method
of development for the popular music industry.
First, research on the utilization of big data technology is needed. This
technology helps analyze individual consumer's needs related to their music
preferences, and predict musical trend by gathering information that is
spread over the virtual world. Including the ability to devise a marketing
strategy that meet these needs based on the given data, ability to use big
data will be a necessity for developmental strategy of popular music
industry in the future.
Second, there can be ties with the performance industry. Currently,
there is a rise in arguments that online-based popular music industry has
hit the limit on growth. Change in music market as a digital industry has
been made with platform of major companies providing the music and
creator of music, such as composer and lyricist, as the main players.
However, as the Korean wave effect of K-Pop has expanded to the area
of performer, time has come for the need for ties with performance
industry and shift to OSMU-based approach.
Third, change in pricing policy in online music industry is needed.
Currently, there is a problem in profit sharing structure of online music
distribution industry that is centered on major companies. The current
customary profit sharing structure and music price continue to create an
unfair condition for creators and performers. This problem reduces the
creative drive that is essential for the popular music industry to develop,
and, therefore, shift in the current pricing policy has to occur.
Fourth, expansion of intellectual property right, such as
acknowledgment of publicity right, is an issue that should be dealt with in
the process of domestic popular music industry changing into more
complex structure. In US and European nations, these rights are already
being recognized and protected through related laws and cases. Movements
to protect artist's interests from the related conflicts are becoming more
active. As culture and art related industry continues to structuralize and
systemize, issues regarding intellectual property right and contracts will
continuously arise. Such disputes are taking place in the domestic market
as well, and efforts are made to actively respond to them.
Therefore, for the popular music industry to ultimately develop,
expansion in the policies related to the industry as well as accurate laws
and standard must be established.
