Poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) is a typical synthetic soluble polymer, which has good oxygen barrier and mechanical properties in the dry state, but its applications are limited in the wet state and in moisture sensitive fields because of its inherent hydrophilic properties (-OH functional group). Specifically, it is necessary to develop materials, which have water-resistance and oxygen and water barrier properties for packaging fields. To enhance the barrier properties of pure PVA, five different modified PVA films were modified by boric acid (BA) as cross-linking agent and their barrier properties, thermal stability and mechanical properties were investigated as a function of the BA content. To expand the application of modified PVA films, the multi-layer films with modified PVA have been prepared through coating and thermal lamination process. The barrier and mechanical properties of multi-layer films with modified PVA was investigated before and after pressure cooker test (PCT) treatment. And the effect of multi-layer films with modified PVA for keeping quality of seasoned-laver were investigated at two different storage conditions; (ⅰ) 23 °C and 50 % relative humidity and (ⅱ) 38 °C and 80 % relative humidity. The physical properties of modified PVA films were strongly dependent upon the chemical structure and morphology of the films originating from the amount of BA and changes in degree of cross-linking. With increasing BA content, the size and amount of PVA crystallites decreased, whereas the cross-linking density increased, resulting in more compact packing of the molecules and lower free volume in the amorphous regions. The glass transition temperature and thermal stability were highly enhanced with increasing BA content. The oxygen transmission rate (OTR) of pure PVA decreased from 5.96 to 0.15 cc/m2day with increasing BA content. Their water-resistant pressure and tensile strength increased with BA loading. Before and after PCT treatment, the chance in barrier and mechanical properties of multi-layer films with modified PVA showed similar value comparable to commercial EVOH film. In storage test of seasoned-laver, the as-prepared multi-layer films were comparatively effective to suppress the increase in peroxide value of seasoned-laver. Comparing the commercially available seasoned-laver packaging film, however, as-prepared multi-layer films did not show any advantage in water activity, due to higher water permeation. Therefore, further studies are required to enhance the physical properties of multi-layer film and expand its packaging applications.
