The permeation and barrier technology of penetrants in packaging materials have been widely studied to protect the quality of packaged products and to provide convenience and safety for customers in packaging environments. The study and application of polymeric packaging materials that respond to external environmental changes (temperature, humidity, pH, etc.) is an intriguing subject that has been receiving substantial research consideration. The objectives of this research were to design polymeric packaging materials with temperature-dependent gas permeabilities using a phase change material (PCM) and to investigate the possibility of application for a packaging system. The respiration of products, the gas permeabilities of packaging materials, and temperature change are considered significant factors in maintaining optimum gas composition in packaging, which affects the quality of agricultural products. In most cases, agricultural products are exposed to a low temperature during storage and transportation; however, they are stored at room temperature during the retail stage at markets, which causes a negative physiological change that originates from the increase in the respiration rate. Thus, polymeric packaging materials with temperature-dependent gas permeabilities have been prepared using octadecane (OD) as a paraffinic PCM with a phase change temperature of around 26–29 °C and polypropylene (PP) as a supporting material for the utilization of OD. First, PP/OD composite films were prepared via twin-screw extrusion, and their chemical, morphological, thermal, and surface properties as well as oxygen and water vapor permeabilities were analyzed as functions of the OD content and temperature. The OD content was well-dispersed in the PP matrix, and two phases (i.e., the PP portion and the OD portion) were present in the PP/OD composite films. When the temperature was increased to near the phase change temperature of OD, the segmental mobility of the OD phase increased, converting its crystalline structure into an amorphous structure. At that time, both the oxygen transmittance rate (OTR) and the water vapor transmittance rate (WVTR) of the PP/OD composite films sharply increased due to the influence of the OD content. Second, hydrophobic ZSM-5 zeolite (ZL) was used as a filler to enhance the dispersion and interfacial interaction between OD molecules and the PP matrix that originated from different flow abilities during the extrusion process. FTIR, SEM, and WAXD analyses showed that the incorporation of ZL in the PP/OD composite films increased the interfacial interaction between PP and OD, resultantly enhancing the thermal stability, the OTR, and mechanical properties after contact with food simulants and thermal treatment. When the temperature was elevated to near the phase change temperature, both the OTR and WVTR of the PP/OD/ZL composite films sharply increased due to the addition of OD; however, permeation jumps in the OTR and WVTR were reduced with an increase in the ZL content. The obtained results are linked to changes in the interfacial interactions and crystallinity of the composite films produced by the addition of ZL. Lastly, the effects on the quality of cherry tomatoes using packaging with polypropylene/octadecane/hydrophobic zeolite (PP/OD/ZL) 0% and 10% composite films with temperature dependent gas permeabilities were investigated at two different temperatures of 10 and 23 °C. The test conditions, A and B with a 0.33 and a 0.53 ratio of volume (weight) of cherry tomatoes per volume (surface area) of packaging materials, respectively, were designed to identify the possibility to use a modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) system for cherry tomatoes. The respiration rate and physiological properties of cherry tomatoes under test condition B changed more rapidly compared to test condition A. For cherry tomatoes packaged with pure PP, a high depletion of O2 and a high accumulation of CO2 occurred during 7 storage days at 10 and 23 °C, which causes the deterioration of cell structures, high ripening, and senescence in cherry tomatoes due to anaerobic respiration. For cherry tomatoes packaged with PP/OD/ZL 0% and 10% composite films, the CO2 (%) was similarly accumulated in the headspace during 7 storage days at 10 °C compared to those packaged with pure PP; however, PP/OD/ZL 0% and 10% composite films could effectively control in the optimum range of the gas concentration to extend the shelf life of cherry tomatoes in a headspace during 7 storage days at 23 °C. This positively affected the firmness, the total soluble solid contents, and the color (a* value) of the cherry tomatoes. Based on these results, the oxygen and water vapor permeabilities of polymers can be modified by paraffinic PCMs. In the vicinity of the phase change temperature, the gas permeability of the polymer/PCM composite films can be reversed by responding to temperature fluctuations. At that point, polymer/PCM composite films were able to continuously control the optimum gas concentration of the headspace in the packaging depending on the temperature, which prevented rapid enzymatic and physiological activities, and they could also minimize the effects of temperature factors on the quality of products.
