This study identifies saccadic eye movement abilities and cognitive functional levels of older adults and explores the saccadic eye movement sub-area categories that affects cognitive functions. Based on this idea, 30 participants without dementia who could engage in eye movement experiment and 30 participants with the diagnosis of dementia were recruited to use saccadic eye movement for the diagnosis and screening of dementia in older adults with dementia.
The independent variable used in the experiment was saccadic eye movement, and to enhance the reliability and accuracy of eye movement ability, Dikablis visual tracer was used. The data generated as independent variable was designated as mean fixation duration, accuracy, and reaction time to digitize eye movement ability. Dependent variable were total score of MMSE-KC and it’s subcategories such as orientation, memory, attention, language ability, visual-spatial construction, and judgement.
The result of the analysis showed insignificant correlation between saccadic eye movement and cognitive function due to ceiling effect of normal older adults, but in older adults with dementia, there was a correlation (P<.05, P<.01) in all sub items except total score and attention of cognitive functions. In the regression analysis, orientation, memory, language ability, and the total score of cognitive function had the R²over .5 explanation power resulting in the increase of effectiveness on saccadic eye movement (P<.01, P<.001).
This research was able to identify the relationship between saccadic eye movement and cognitive functions in older adults with dementia, and determine the prediction of the dependent variable, cognitive function, through saccadic eye movement, the independent variable. This research may be helpful in identifying the cognition level depending on the decline of saccadic eye movement of older adults with dementia, and to determine the cognitive training task for appropriate intervention.
