Manganese naturally exists in the form of soluble Mn(II) or insoluble Mn(III, IV) in aqueous phase. Soluble Mn(II) is frequently found in groundwater or bottom water of lake and reservoirs and can be oxidized to manganese oxides according to surrounding environment. The water containing manganese can cause problems such as discolored water, unpleasant taste, staining of laundry, fouling or scaling of pipes in drinking water distribution system. Therefore, when there is manganese more than regulations in source water, it is essential to apply processes suitable for removing manganese to a water treatment system.
In conventional water treatment processes, manganese is generally removed using sedimentation or sand filtration after oxidation by aeration or using manganese-coated sand. However, the processes often cannot meet 0.05 mg/L as Mn of the recently enhanced standard for drinking water in South Korea. Therefore, it is necessary to develop and optimize water treatment processes for effective manganese removal.
The objective of this study, therefore, was to develop a multiple oxidation process coupled with membrane filtration for the treatment of manganese in aqueous phase. Two oxidants, which were potassium permanganate (KMnO4) and sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) in this study, were simultaneously utilized for the multiple oxidation, and then the precipitated manganese oxides by the multiple oxidation were filtrated by low pressure membranes.
In batch experiments, the multiple oxidation process coupled with membrane filtration showed more effective manganese removal than did single oxidation with membrane filtration using either of KMnO4 or NaOCl. Using the multiple oxidation, each optimum dosage of KMnO4 and NaOCl was much less than that of single oxidation. Moreover, the deterioration of manganese removal at low temperature was less serious for the multiple oxidation than that for the single oxidation.
Based on the results of the batch experiments, a continuous multiple oxidation – membrane filtration system was operated. Interestingly, manganese removal by the continuous system was higher than that by batch experiments at the same oxidation conditions. In addition, the membrane fouling during membrane filtration after multiple oxidation was less than that without multiple oxidation, which was the opposite to what had been expected before the experiments. These phenomena were interpreted as follows: The cake layer formed by the accumulation of manganese oxide particles on the membrane surface could act as dynamic membrane, or secondary dynamic membrane. The dynamic membrane consisting of manganese oxides might provide additional chances of oxidation after adsorbing soluble Mn(II) on itself and also could reduce membrane fouling by removing foulants before the foulants reaching membrane surface or pores.
These results indicates that the multiple oxidation process coupled with membrane filtration developed in this study was very efficient in removing manganese in aqueous phase and would be applicable to actual water treatment processes for manganese removal.
