ABSTRACT
The location and spatial configuration of a traditional folk village in Korea have been affected by a variety of backgrounds of thoughts, including Korean folk faith, eumyangohaeng (陰陽五行, The theory of Yin-Yang and Five Elements), pungsujiri (風水地理, feng shui) and political-social structure. In general, it has been located at an inclined plane at the foot of a mountain in the sunshine, facing the south in the layout of baesanimsu(背山臨水) terrain (the complex's back is toward the mountains and it faces the water, the traditional concept of what constitutes a fortuitous geographic location), jeonjeohugo(前低後高) (terrain is low in the front and high in the back). However, our ancestors would adjust the site even if they were not completely satisfied with it, as not all of their desired sites were perfect. Oeamli Traditional Folk Village, the object of this study, has the location conditions that are different from those of other traditional folk villages. As such, it is necessary to understand how the Yean Lee clan, which came from another region, made Oeamli Village without any conflict with other clans who had been indigenously living around in connection with the characteristics and prototype of a space structure. This study looked at the location of a village and the shape of its initial development 300 years ago, based on yeolseungjeonggi(閱勝亭記) written by Lee Sa Jong and Oeamgi(巍巖記) written by Lee Gan, and further we examined yeopseung(厭勝) and bibo (裨補, supplementary) elements and a space of faith in order to overcome the disadvantages of the location through the site survey and interviews with the residents. Oeamgi(巍巖記), which was written in 1723, shows that it was situated based on the natural surroundings of Osan (五山, five mountains) and Osu (五水, five rivers) around the village. The location of Oeamli Village features a hinterland (mountain), cultivated land (rice field and field) and habitation site (house). The location of the village features weathered stones coming from Seolhwa Mountain scattered about around the river, which is demonstrated to be unsuitable for the location of a village through an example of the thick stone fence made with stones gathered after leveling the house site as well as through a document on stone throwing fight, the village's folk game. It is thought that it was desired to locate a habitation site on the current location with good drainage in order to avoid the humidity of land, which has been used as cultivated land. That's why they selected this unfavorable place as their residential site. It has an important correlation with the village waterway which was known to have been made by Lee Yi Byung, the second son of Lee Gan. According to the interview with the residents, the artificial waterway of Oeamli Village was made to i) suppress the force of a fire coming from Seolhwa Mountain which was known as five occurring shape, and ii) suppress the strong spiritual force because there once was a stone tomb at the site of the village. As well, Lee Gan, who used Oeam as a pen name, built a villa at Gangdang-gol to live there, which is confirmed through the letters engraved on the stone by his descendants around Yongchu to commemorate his academic achievements and orthodox succession to his academic roots. Looking at spaces for faith in Oeamli Village, first of all, Jangseung (totem at the entrance of a village) and Songrim (pine tree forest) have a combined symbolic meaning as a divine and holy place and the function of providing good feng shui. Old pine trees along the village road and evergreen trees in individual houses are designed as supplementary elements to control micro climate, including the shading of falling sunshine west. The zelkova tree, called dangsanmok (Sacred Tree), in the heart of the village, played an important role in terms of faith factors, and also had positive influence on the mindset of the villagers, helping them feel comfortable mentally. In addition, sansindang (the shrine of the mountain god) at the mid-slope of Seolhwa Mountain served Seolhwa Mountain as god and played a pivotal role in praying for the peace of the village and preserving psychological comfort and stability in order to minimize potential damages. Finally, this study reminded us of the wisdom of our ancestors, who tried to make the most of the unfavorable locational conditions of Oeamli Village. It is considered that further study is needed for historic data on the village in a more systematic way and information on the village, which have continued to the present.
