Abstract
The purpose of this study is to understand Youth Companion by examining their professional development experiences. This study intends to generalize Youth Companion's professional development experiences by analyzing individual Youth Companion's specific development experiences.
The phenomenological research by Giorgi was used to understand human existences by analyzing interviews of participants. The participants of this study are those who worked part time or full time as Youth Companions in Ulsan, Korea. The six participants agreed to share their experiences through Youth Compaion. Four of participants are in their 50s, and 2 participants in their 40s having worked more than five years. Each interview was conducted twice from March till April 2016 for 60 ~ 90 minutes. The procedure was continued until no further stories were told. The interview resulted in a total of 477 elicited data, and it was divided into twenty-eight auxiliary factors and nine main factors.
The main nine factors were below: ‘Entered the path of a Youth Companion’, ‘Faced the difficulties of those fields’, ‘Effort to add professionality in counseling', 'Improve the expertise in counseling in visit', 'Have acquired the importance of Human resource and it's interconnection through effective methods applicable', 'Come out the responsibility & passion which can save a single person', ‘Growth as an expert’, ‘Find the meaning of Youth Companion’, ‘Better future plans'.
The results of this study show that the main factors are common in experience of expertise development as Youth Companions.
The study results are below.
First, Youth Companions have made an effort to improve expertise for at-risk youth's adaption and growth.
Second, Youth Companions have achieved expertise by giving various at-risk youth's an advice, and it could be further applied in the field.
Third, they are confident because they have consulted while providing additional service to clients.
The significance of this study can be presented in three aspects.
First, differ from the exsting counselor, it has specified the professionalism to be developed as Youth Companion by considering their specificity.
Second, this study let the participants to have an insight into professionalism of Youth Companion and provided an opportunity to take a moment to reflect on their lives through the interview.
Third, it is expected as basic data to develop education or program for Youth Companion's support by understanding effort of their professionalism.
In conclusion, this study was designed to raise social awareness of counseling specialist for at-risk youth's and to provide a data, which reflects the thoughts and experiences of Youth Companions in the field.
