The purpose of this study is to promote recovery and rehabilitation for drug addicts through a case study of drug addicts who are participating in NA meetings in Seoul and Busan that the researcher met in Busan NA meetings while volunteering for 7 years.
A total of 15 study subjects, who agreed to participate in the study, were selected by using purposive sampling and a qualitative case study was applied for this study.
This study used a descriptive questionnaire to collect basic information, data was collected through an in-depth interview based on the information and analysis was conducted by categories: general trait, drug addict-related particulars, recovery from drug addiction, and rehabilitation.
Results from this study can be summarized as follows.
First, the study subjects were composed of 11 male and 4 female participants. 5 of the subjects were in their 30s, 6 were in their 40s, and 4 were in their 50s which all are in a productive age group.
Second, the subjects were abusing drugs for a long period of time and had experiences of being legally punished, and most of their experiences of getting treatment was being hospitalized in a mental hospital. The subjects answered that they used medicines during occasions when they could not find drugs, being hospitalized, staying in a jail, participating in a therapy group, and inpatient period.
Third, according to their answers, there is a certain point of time when a feeling of regret comes in the process of recovery from drug addiction. As they experience the very bottom of their lives and face various difficulties and pains, they start to feel regret abusing drugs and this became the motivation to take medicines. However, the subjects were not able to stop abusing drugs by themselves and support and help from other people were required to live without using drugs as they participated in therapy groups and received treatment from the hospital. Negative experiences from the change caused after using medicines resulted in the desire for using drugs and this was the main reason for reoccurrence.
Fourth, although they had been able to feel pleasure in daily life by social rehabilitation, they were having hard times returning to society due to lack of job rehabilitation for it.
It was found that consistent participation in an NA meeting removes an arrogant attitude gained in the recovery process so that the participants keep remembering that they are drug addicts and can live a humble life which makes them live a full life away from drugs and is a specific and practical way to overcome drug addiction.
Based on these study results, there are some suggestions as follows.
First, mandatory drug addiction prevention programs for teenagers need to be conducted in schools to prevent drug addiction.
Second, a plan is required to lead drug addicts to rehabilitation institutions after they are released from a jail by making them understand drug addiction through NA meetings and by education about treatment in a correctional facility.
Third, expansion of facilities for long-term job training rehabilitation and local rehabilitation centers or local shelters to safely help drug addicts in an emergency situation of reoccurrence is required.
Fourth, it is necessary to develop a program to make the family of drug addicts understand drug addiction.
Fifth, it is recommended to use and apply cases of subjects who are participating in therapy and rehabilitation fields and have recovered from drug addiction as seen in the example of the study subjects, and application plans that equip those subjects with proper qualifications and allow the subjects to work in therapy and rehabilitation fields as a lecturer of drug addiction is necessary.
