Multicultural families have consistently increased with changes in Korean society, but in the eyes of the public, the husband of a multicultural family still remains as a conflict inducer and perpetrator of domestic violence. Consequently, this study’s purpose is to understand the husbands’ experience of marriage and marital conflict in multicultural families and what it signifies, to change the existing viewpoints on husbands of multicultural families, and to identify practical implications for marital conflict prevention and roles for the husband in multicultural families.
From subjects visiting multicultural family support centers to request counseling, 2 people willing to part in the research who were in risk of divorce from marital conflict were chosen to be the participants of this study.
To promote understanding about the diverse contexts of marital relationship interactions and the complicated reality that husbands of multicultural families were faced with, narrative research methods were applied and used. From 2015 November to 2016 May, data such as field notes and recordings were collected through in-depth interviews and phone calls with the participant husbands and their wives of multicultural families, and research texts were composed through the field texts. During the research process, the participants organized broken-up memories about marriage and marital conflict experiences by life cycle to become self-aware of marital conflict experiences and restructured the meaning of experiences and introspection of how they tried to deal with it.
Through self-awareness of experience and reflective introspection and restructuring, the characteristic of the husbands’ experiences of marriage and marital conflict was expressed as ‘Arirang by oneself’ in the personal area, as ‘Arirang in the same boat’ in the marital relationship and shared living area, and as the metaphorical expression ‘Arirang hill’ in the 3rd person, which is the relatives or social relationship area.
Looking at he results of the study, husbands in multicultural families don't have advance information about international marriage, and marriage life that starts with a lack of time for forming a sense of intimacy creates an experience of discrimination and alienation through culture shock and loses family identity. Rather than experience the anxiety of family disorganization and the loneliness of living alone, they choose the passive and evasive option of putting up with it and enduring it.
Based on these results, the following solutions were suggested for the role of husbands and marital conflict prevention in multicultural families. First, during the early stages of marriage, they need to make an effort to form a sense of intimacy with their wife, adjust their role expectations through marriage, accept the language barrier, and recognize the differences between cultures for a process of integration. Second, they need to develop a sense of solidarity and family community with their wife, and form an equal marital relationship where they respect and support each other. Third, in a trustworthy marital relationship, they need to acquire methods of solutions to marital conflict by mutually agreeing to find an alternative.
