Formulations of acrylamido dyes containing comonomers can be photografted onto cotton, wool and PET fabrics upon UV irradiation at room temperature without neutral salts, which makes it a novel coloration process of excellent environmental friendliness. In previous study the dyes containing α-bromoacrylamido groups were employed as grafting monomers to be photografted onto cotton, wool and PET fabrics under continuous UV irradiation. In this study the photografting of two reactive dyes of Reactive Red 84 and Reactive Yellow 39, can be assisted by the addition of the comonomers by reducing steric hindrance of the bulky dyes during the polymerization, as indicated by the higher K/S and G% values compared with the dye alone. Compared with several different comonomers, acrylamide (AAm) produced the highest G% and K/S for cotton and wool fabrics probably because the same acrylamido groups in the dyes and acrylamide comonomer should have similar reactivity for the copolymerization also the AAm has higher water solubility and polymerization rate compared with other (meth)acrylate comonomers. While for cotton fabric, under UV irradiation, the photoinitiator or the dyes abstracted hydrogen atoms from cotton surface formed cellulose radicals, which initiated the copolymerization of the dyes and acrylamide (AAm) to form the grafted polymeric dyes. A photoinitiatior(PI) is an essential part in the photografting formulation. Three kinds of PIs, such as Irgacure 2959, APi-180 and Darocur 1173, are employed in the study, Irgacure 2959 was found to be the most suitable PI. In the terms of dyeing wool fabric can be carried out in the absence of a photoinitiator at ambient temperature due to the free thiyl radicals generated from disulfide scission of cystein residue in wool. However, for poly(ethylene terephthalate) fabric the photografting may be assisted by the copolymerization of dimethylaminopropyl methacrylamide (DMAPMA) comonomer together with the acrylamido reactive dyes, which may increase degree of polymerzation with low molecular DMAPMA. The polymerization of the dyes and comonomers induced by UV irradiation can be proved by MALDI-TOF mass, 1H NMR, elemental analysis, UV-vis spectroscopy and FT-IR spectra. Moreover, the grafting yield and K/S value can be influenced by UV erengy, pH, concentrations of PI, comonomer and dye. In terms of cotton fabric about 90% of the red dyes and 94% of acrylamide are photocopolymerized and the degree of polymerization is estimated to be 13.2 according to 1H NMR and MALDI-TOF Mass analyses. The optimal K/S values of the grafted cotton fabrics showed 13.3 and 12.3 for red and yellow dyes respectively. The optimal UV-grafting coloration can be achieved when a UV energy of 25J/cm2 was irradiated on the padded fabrics with a formulation of 0.65 mole ratio of acrylamide to the dyes, 7% Irgacure 2959 on the dye weight of 9% on the weight of bath at pH 6. As to wool fabric about 88% of the yellow dyes and 91% of acrylamide are photocopolymerized and the degree of polymerization is estimated to be 12.9 according to 1H NMR and MALDI-TOF Mass analyses. The optimal K/S values of the grafted wool fabrics showed 18.7 and 18.5 for red and yellow dyes respectively. The optimal UV-grafting coloration can be achieved when a UV energy of 25J/cm2 was irradiated on the padded fabrics with a formulation of 0.65 mole ratio of acrylamide to the dyes, the dyes using 7% on the weight of bath at pH 2.5. In the case of PET fabric about 90% of the red dyes and 92% of DMAPMA are photocopolymerized and the degree of polymerization is estimated to be 13.0 according to 1H NMR and MALDI-TOF Mass analyses. The optimal K/S values of the grafted PET fabrics showed 8.6 and 6.8 for red and yellow dyes respectively. The optimal UV-grafting coloration can be achieved when a UV energy of 25J/cm2 was irradiated on the padded fabrics with a formulation of 7.5 mole ratio of DMAPMA to the dyes, 3% Irgacure 2959 on the dye weight of 9% on the weight of bath at pH 6. Finally the washing, rubbing and light fastness of UV-induced grafted fabrics were superior to those of conventional wet dyeing due to the stronger intermolecular interactions of the high-molecular-weight polymerized dyes. UV-grafting coloration could replace conventional adsorption-based coloration, which can save water, energy, chemicals and environment.
