The main methodology of this research is a drama therapy program using destructiveness for Adolescent under Probation, in which the program deals with a participant’s emotions and accepts destructive impulses. The research is designed to verify how this type of drama therapy affects a participant’s destructive behavior, focused on reduction in sensitiveness, positive self-understanding, and improvement of social adaptability. The participants were composed of 6 female juveniles (3 first offenders, 3 second offenders) who were placed under probation in Gyeonggi Province. Series of the therapy were conducted for 10 sessions every week from Oct.12 to Nov.30, 2015 and each session lasted for 2 hours. In this drama therapy program using destructiveness, projection and improvisation revealed the participant’s hidden urges that were placed behind their feelings and behaviors such as a crime of opportunity and a crime of greed. By using a projective technique in drama, the participants could face their crimes from objective standards. Also, the participants could find their own characteristics from dramatic reality and connect those characteristics to their daily lives to cope with their problems. Based on those findings, the participants performed as a positive future self-image in a play, so that they could restore their confidence and successfully integrate back into society. This research closely looked into the behavior analysis and the changes of the participant’s role, feelings, and urges. Also, this research adopted the scale of the participant’s self-esteem and compared it before and after the play. Juveniles on probation honestly examined their problematic roles under the safe dramatic plot. They also expressed anxiety and guilt which were derived from negative self-awareness and they started to recognize problematic emotions that cause conflicts. Additionally, reconstructing destructive impulses and experiences found to be linked with the ability to endure frustration, resulted in reducing unnecessary defenses and raising sense of stability to their lives. As a final work of the 10 session therapy, the participants invited the probation officers, their families, and friends to the probation office and performed in front of them. The results are as follows. For the first offenders, they learned how to control themselves and resist impulses; so that they can live their lives without escaping from other’s stereotyped prejudices. For the second offenders, they recognized that their behaviors of repeating crimes were wrong survival strategies caused by self-protection, and they fully examined their emotions of self-criticism. Dealing with their emotions related to destructiveness and creating tragic plot became a significant factor to overcome frustration from the failure on the early stage of their circumstances. After all, they learned how to properly express what they want and how to ask for help. From the comparison on the scale of self-esteem, average scores of each item before and after play are listed; self-criticism increased by 1 point, relationship with others increased by 5 points, leadership popularity decreased by 8 points, and self-assertion and anxiety remained same. This research could lead to a conclusion that the drama therapy program using destructiveness is effective in preventing self-degradation and restoring reliability. Individual average scores are listed; 1st offender A 6 points up, 1st offender B 2 points up, 1st offender C refused to measure , 2nd offender D 1 point down ,2nd offender E 9 point down, and 2nd offender F remained same. This difference indicates that the first offender s achieved accomplishment and restored confidence from the play, while the second offenders reflected their self-awareness as a result. The first step of program, ‘revealing urges through projection and improvisation’, helps to examine one’s true image which is disguised by apparent emotions and behaviors. A participant could recognize one’s urge that is hidden behind the accidental behavior at the second step of program, ‘play with destructive emotion’. The third step of program, ‘Performance on self-understanding through destructiveness and integration of awareness,’ is a final stage which helps to accept destructive impulses inside one’s mind and to recognize that those impulses can be used positively. This research has a significant meaning that a drama therapy program using destructiveness can be utilized as a correlational method to help juvenile offenders to integrate back into society and to improve emotional stability by communicating with them in cooperation with probation offices and facilities.
