The purpose of the study is to discuss theoretic basis of the claim that drama therapy programs can be helpful for improving the interest in the surrounding world and for enhancing the ability to social interaction of children with Autism Spectrum Disorders(ASDs) and to provide the fundamental materials for organizing the programs. ASDs are known as neurodevelopmental disorders and categorized as one of the developmental disorders. The disorders are characterized by communication difficulties, social deficits, stereotyped or restricted interests and behaviors. Although diagnosed as ASDs, children with ASDs have a variety of severity of the deficits and show diverse types of symptoms. The common symptom, however, is the difficulty in social communication and interaction. Dramatic art has the properties that it requires continuous interests into the others and the world, demands sympathy with others, and needs collaboration with others. According to some remarkable sociological studies, social interaction can be regarded as role playing in theater and therefore, socialization and communication process can be explained with dramatic concepts. Moreover, the dramatic structure of the mind of children with ASDs, which is inferred from the dramatic structure of the mind of human beings, provides the basis of the assertion that dramatic therapy is an effective approach to help them. Based on the above theoretic consideration, we present a dramatic therapy program for children with ASDs, which is organised as follows. The therapeutic target is the children with ASDs of mild or moderate abnormality, whose Childhood Autism Rating Scale(CARS) is between 30 and 36.5. The object is to improve the interest in the surrounding world and to enhance the ability to social interaction of them. The therapy is usually performed in the form of small group with three to four children and sometimes combined with individual therapy. The content is organised using the Embodiment-Projection-Role(EPR) approach which represents the dramatic developmental stages of human begins. Each section basically consists of preparation activities, main activities, and finishing activities. The content of the therapy program is as follows. As a warm-up, It has the pre-stretching play to have sympathy with others in a group. The stage of embodiment consists of sensory plays to appreciate themselves and imitation games to have interests in the surrounding world. The stage of projection consists of doll plays in which the participants practice communication and social skills and learn the ability to represent symbols. Finally, the stage of role play consists of dramatized story plays to develop imagination and to improve sociality. The suggested content is totally organised with 12 sessions. The organization can be used as a reference model to form the actual programs. It is necessary to adjust flexibly the detail content and duration by interviewing applicants individually. Since drama therapy programs for children with ASDs have not been developed enough so far, it is necessary to develop, revise, and supplement the programs continuously. We hope that our study is a small cornerstone of the environment where children with ASDs get along with others in our society.
